Fiat 500X is expected to be launched here in coming months
Fiat is an internationally-acclaimed car manufacturer that has some highly appealing cars in its product portfolio. In India, however, Fiat has pretty much struggled to capture the imagination of the car buying lot. True, cars like the Palio and even the Punto and the Linea enjoy a cult following, but unfortunately, these cars have failed to find many takers in our country’s mainstream car market. Currently, the manufacturer’s product portfolio for India comprises of three models –ย theย Linea, the Punto and the Avventura. Also coming our way later this year is the hotly anticipated 500 Abarth. While the 500 Abarth could find many takers in the niche segment, it won’t really help Fiat India revive its fortunes in the mainstream car market. This is exactly where the 500X steps in! The Fiat 500X, when launched in India, will be sold in the compact SUV segment and will rival the likes of Renault Duster.

The 500X looks like a more rugged and bigger sister of the cutesy 500 hatchback and comes with similar design cues, such as –ย circular headlamps, a large greenhouse and a chrome grille. The 500X is 4.25 long, 1.80 meters wide and is 1.60 meters high. The car has a bootย space of 350 litres, which can be expanded to a great margin by folding the ‘Fold&Tumble’ rear seats. The 500X will have a total of 5 trim levels – Pop, Pop Star, Lounge, Cross and Cross Plus. The 500X, being a compact crossover, boasts of a decentย ground clearance of 179 mm. It also gets skid plates for the bumpers, along with approach and departure angles that are really favourable for ‘soft road’ usage. Internationally, the 500X is available with a choice of following motors –
- 1.6-litre, 110 hp E-torQ petrol engine
- 1.4-litre, 140 hp Turbo MultiAir II petrol engine
- 1.4-litre, 170 hp Turbo MultiAir II engine with nine-speed automatic transmission and four wheel drive
- 95hp, 1.3-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel engine
- 120hp 1.6-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel engine
- 140hp 2.0-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel engine with four wheel drive
The India-spec model would get the 95hp diesel engine option. Fiat India could also launch the 4wd variant with a 2.0-litre, 140 hp diesel engine.

Fiat India is yet to announce the Fiat 500X India launch details, but our sources at Fiat’s Ranjangaon facility near Pune inform us that the 500X is being extensively tested and Fiat India is aiming for high levels of localization for this model. Our guess is that the Fiat 500X India launch would take place in early 2016 and the small crossover could go on sale at a starting price of approx. INR 7 lacs.
