Tata recently launched theย compact sedan derivative of the Tiago. The Tigorย is a sub-compact sedan that sits below the Tata Zest. Currently, it does not have any direct rivals. But very soon, Chevrolet will launch the Essentia in India, which we feel will be a direct rival to the Tigor. It is based on the upcoming new Chevrolet Beat. Keeping in mind the pricing of the current Chevrolet Beat on sale in India, the Essentia could cost almost the same as the Tigor.ย Tata has not been too aggressive with the pricing of the Tigor, which costs 90k more than the Tiago.

The Tigor gets the same engines as the Tiago. There is a 1.2 L Petrol and a 1.05 L diesel on offer. Both engines come with a 5-speed manual transmission. We expect the upcoming Chevrolet Essentia to get the same engines as the current model Beat – 1.2 L Petrol and 1.0 L Diesel. However, power and torque figures may vary.

Tataย has not revealed fuel efficiency figures of the Tigor yet. However, we expect them to be only slightly lower than the Tiago’s owing to the extra 50 or so kg the sedan has put on. Claimed mileage figures of the Essentia could be in the 25-26 KMPL region for the diesel variants and 19-20 KMPL for the petrol ones.

For the segment, the Tigor gets a very healthy set of features including a 5-inch colour touchscreen display, auto aircon, electrically adjustable ORVMs, etc. The old Beat that is on sale currently has always been criticised for the lack of features. Hopefully, GM will address this issue with the launch of the new 2017 models of the Beat and Essentia.

Tata Tigor vs Chevrolet Essentia Design Comparison
Both cars are identical to their respective donor hatchbacks in terms of design until the B-pillar. The front end styling is more or less the same. However, the Tigor gets double barrel smoked headlamps. Overall, the Tigor boasts a notchback shape instead of a conventional three-box profile. It features split tail lamps with LED detailing. The rear bumper gets black inserts lower down that house the reflector units. The Essentia features a more conventionalย three-box shape. The upcoming new model Beat is based on the current car, hints of which can be seen in its side profile.
Much like the front end of both cars, the cabin of the Tigor and Essentia is also nearly identical to the Tiago and Beat respectively.ย In case of the Tigor, the only difference inside is in the form of a new touchscreen display and auto aircon. Based on the what was shown at the Auto Expo in 2016, the Essentia will share its dashboard design with the upcoming Beat hatchback. However, it will make use of lighter colours inside.

Tata Tigor vs Chevrolet Essentia Comparison – Verdict
With prices of the Tigor starting well below the current compact sedans on sale in India, these two could end up creating an altogether new sub-segment. GM will need to work hard if it intends to match what Tata is offering, at least on paper.
- Price – Tigor costs around Rs. 90,000 more than the Tiago. Expect the Essentia to be priced in the same region.
- Specifications – Engine and transmission options will be identical to their respective hatchback siblings.ย Tigor scores slightly higher in terms of power output.
- Features – Tigor gets features such as auto aircon, touchscreen, reverse parking camera etc. We will have to wait until the official launch of the Essentia to know the final list of features.
- Design –ย Tata seems to have done a great job of integrating a boot into the Tiago’s design. Chevrolet Essentia features a more conventional three-box shape.
