Toyota has confirmed that it will continue with BS-6 diesel engines for India. The manufacturer thinks that the demand for diesel engines will still remain.

Amidst the growing tensions regarding BS-6 norms, Toyota has confirmed that it will introduce BS-6 diesel engines in India. In Toyota’s garage, most of its models including Fortuner, Etios and the Innova Crysta come with diesel engines.

An official from Toyota states that the demand for diesel variants will continue even after the prices of diesel vehicles will increase from next year. Toyota will continue to manufacture diesel variants in India for a long time.

Toyota Fortuner and Innova Crysta are the segment leaders and also Toyota’s top players in India. Most of the sales garnered by these two vehicles are of diesel engines, rather than petrol ones.

As everyone knows, diesel engines are more fuel-efficient than a petrol unit. Come next year, the prices of diesel vehicles will increase by a considerable margin, primarily because it is expensive to make a diesel engine BS-6 compliant.

Toyota has confirmed that it would not be launching electric vehicles in India soon. Rather, it is planning to introduce some hybrid vehicles for the budget segment. As of now, Toyota only has the Camry as its hybrid car for India.

Unlike Toyota, other manufacturers like Tata, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki are taking serious measures. Maruti will phase out its diesel engines by next year and for some time, will only come with a petrol engine.

Tata and Mahindra are going to discontinue smaller diesel engines and continue with the bigger units. So, Tata Tiago, Tigor and Bolt will only be available in petrol variants from April 2020. The KUV100 will also miss out on the smaller 1.2 Litre diesel engine.
