Royal Enfield Bill from 1986

Royal Enfield Bill from 1986

The bill of the Royal Enfield Bullet from back in 1986 is doing rounds on the internet. It’s truly captivating to observe the prices of everyday items from a few decades ago. For many millennials, that period seems like an entirely different world. We frequently receive lectures from our parents about the purchasing power of money in the past. Often, it’s difficult for us to grasp just how affordable things used to be during that time. Of course, the incomes people earned back then were also in line with those costs. Nonetheless, these gentle reminders have a way of challenging our perceptions of contemporary life.

As per the visuals in this image, the bike used to cost Rs 18,700. The information in the bill tells us that this was generated by a certain Sandeep Auto Company. It was an authorised Enfield dealer somewhere in Bokaro, Jharkhand. Interestingly, this amount was the on-road price of the iconic retro tourer motorcycle. The charm of this bike is at an all-time high despite being in production for decades. For comparison, the on-road price of the Royal Enfield Classic 350 is Rs 2.54 lakh in Delhi for the top trim. That is over 17 times the price in 1986.

This engine is paired with a 5-speed gearbox. The bike is built on a twin downtube frame and boasts a telescopic fork in the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear with a 6-stage preload adjustment. In the top-tier variant, you’ll find disc brakes on both wheels, while the base model offers a combination of disc and drum brakes.

What We Think

We are quite shocked to see this too. While we understand that the prices of everything have gone significantly up in the last few years, the fact that there was so much difference is absurd. But we must also understand that it was 37 years ago. Those were completely different times. Still, reminders like these help us put things into perspective. What is impressive is the fact that this motorcycle has been able to maintain its legacy all this while. There are no other models that have been in constant production from that time which are selling this well today. That is a testament to the immense success the Bullet moniker has enjoyed in our market since time immemorial.
