Why Converting Base Models into Top Models in Aftermarket Shops Could be a Bad Idea

convert base to top model

In the last few years, many aftermarket car shops have become incredibly popular in transforming any car

In this post, we shall tackle the truth around the growing trend of car owners trying to upgrade their base model cars to resemble top variants. With the availability of countless aftermarket accessories, especially in markets like Karol Bagh in Delhi, converting a base variant into a top model seems tempting. Fancy LED headlamps, touchscreen infotainment systems, alloy wheels, or electric ORVMs all appear to enhance your car’s appeal. But behind the glamour, these modifications often lead to long-term headaches. I shall discuss a few of these so that my audience can get educated to make an informed decision.

Converting Base Models into Top Models in Aftermarket Shops

One of the most critical issues with aftermarket conversions is electrical tampering. Car manufacturers spend years engineering safe and reliable electrical layouts. When aftermarket shops splice wires or tap into the system to install DRLs, projectors, or powered seats, it can overload the circuit. This may cause blown fuses, malfunctioning sensors, or even short circuits, leading to fire hazards. Installing top-model LED headlights without compatible wiring or relays can damage the battery and alternator is a prime example of this. Another major drawback is the impact on your car’s warranty and insurance. Any electrical modification or unauthorized installation typically voids the manufacturer’s warranty. So, even if your engine or AC fails later, the service centre may deny warranty coverage.

Similarly, we see the insurance companies denying claims for any mishaps which are a direct consequence of aftermarket car modifications. In addition to that, aftermarket accessories may look impressive initially, but they rarely match OEM quality. Poorly fitted parts often lead to rattles, leaks, and panel misalignment over time. Cheap materials fade or break easily, especially under Indian weather conditions. Furthermore, many aftermarket parts, like touchscreens or ambient lighting systems, lack proper calibration. This not only affects user experience but can also interfere with the car’s sensors and electronics.

Apart from that, several aftermarket modifications are technically illegal. Replacing headlights with high-intensity projectors or fitting non-approved LED bulbs can blind oncoming drivers and invite challans. Similarly, structural changes like adding sunroofs or powered tailgates compromise the car’s integrity and crash safety. In my experience, these are the top issues one will most likely face with such alterations to the stock cars if you go to inexperienced car shops. I would rather advise my readers to invest in the OEM accessories and higher trims rather than relying on aftermarket modification houses. In the long run, that investment will be more fruitful and reliable.

I’ve seen this trend grow over the years. While the appeal is understandable, the risks are too often overlooked. This piece rightly calls out the hidden dangers- electrical tampering, warranty voids, insurance hassles, and safety compromises. I fully stand by the advice: stick to OEM parts or invest in a higher trim—it pays off in reliability and peace of mind.
