Honda has largely been riding on the back of Honda City and Amaze’s success. Without a shred of doubt, the Honda City has been a very popular sedan in the Indian market. Even the enthusiasts prefer it because of its iconic i-VTec engine. Then Amaze came along as a smaller sedan and was an instant success. However, apart from these two cars, Honda was never able to translate this success to its entire portfolio. Now, owing to constant declining sales, it has decided to pull the plug on its flagship SUV and Sedan, CR-V and Civic.

Apart from poor sales, it has decided to shift its production plant from Greater Noida to Taapukara, Rajasthan. Now, having a limited production capacity there, Honda had to either choose which models to manufacture there or invest more to enable the production of every vehicle. But investing in upgrading the production plant to manufacture products that are not very successful doesn’t make sense. So, Honda decided to axe the Civic and CR-V from their fleet entirely. Now, they can instead focus on their better-selling cars and service network.

Honda Sales Figures for November 2020

It must, however, be noted that Honda’s car sales for the month of November 2020 have gone up by 54.7% as compared to November 2019. (9990 units in Nov’20 and 6459 units in Nov’19). It sits comfortably at a 3.5% market share in Nov’20 in comparison to 2.5% in Nov’19. This shows that the company is not in crisis by any stretch of the imagination. Instead, axing the Civic and CR-V will allow Honda to focus more on its existing products. They can try to penetrate deep into the market with their current lineup. City and Amaze still continue to be very successful in our market.
