Honda is offering huge discounts on the current-gen BS6 City petrol of up to Rs 1 lakh before the new-gen City arrives towards the end of May. Perhaps this is the best time to get your hands on one.
Honda had rolled out the BS6-complaint versions of the current-gen City towards the end of 2019 even though they already had plans of bringing the new-gen City to India very soon. The next-gen Honda City is just round the corner. In fact, it would have already been launched had the lockdown not been imposed. However, Honda wants to clear off as many units of the current-gen BS6 City as possible before the new car arrives and in effect to that, they are offering huge discounts of upto Rs 1 lakh on the City. Perhaps time has never been more favorable than this if you had been wanting a Honda City.
The discounts starts right from the lower-spec variants of the Honda City – SV MT, V MT and V CVT. These variants are each being offered with a cash discount of Rs 25,000 and further, there’s an exchange bonus of Rs 20,000. The total savings on these variants can thus amount to Rs 45,000. Moving on the mid-spec VX MT variant, it is available with a flat cash discount of Rs 37,000 and then there’s an exchange bonus of Rs 35,000. Saving on the mid-spec VX MT variant thus amounts to Rs 72,000.
It is however on the top-spec variants of the Honda City – ZX MT, VX CVT and ZX CVT – that a discount of up to Rs 1 lakh can be availed. Honda is offering a flat cash discount of Rs 50,000 along with an exchange bonus of Rs 50,000 with the total discount amount thus amounting to Rs 1 lakh. And this discount is exclusive of the additional corporate discounts for those who can avail them. Honda has only been selling BS6 petrol variants of the current-gen City and these discounts are only for the petrol variants. The diesel variants of the City had been discontinued by early April.

The current-gen City is powered by a BS6-compliant 1.5L petrol engine that produces 119hp. Even though its BS6 complaint, this engine will not be carried over to the next-gen car. Honda is bringing a brand new 1.5L petrol engine with Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) valve gear for the next-gen City. It will produce 121hp which a mere 2hp increment over the current engine but it is expected to be much more refined with more linear power delivery across the rev range. The 1.5L diesel engine will also make a comeback in the new-gen City in BS6 form.

Honda is also not going to phase out the current version of the City and it will continue to be sold alongside the new-gen car. Even Hyundai did the same thing with the Grand i10 and the Nios. The current model will however see a significant drop in price once the new car arrives and it will only allow Honda to operate across a much wider segment. The current model will then make it to the fleet segment as well. As businesses are resuming and with relaxations in place amidst the lockdown, Honda has reopened 118 showrooms and 155 service centers across India. You can also avail of these discounts on the current City from ‘Honda from Home’ online sales platform. Meanwhile, the new City is expected to arrive by the end of May.
