Other than the upcoming Jeep Renegade and the Kia SP Concept, there is another upcoming entrant in the compact SUV segment. The MG RX5 will enter this segment and is expected to launch in 2019. Currently, it is sold in the Middle Eastern countries with Left Hand Drive system. Here, it will rival Creta, Duster, Terrano, Scorpio. Globally, it is available only in two petrol engine options – 1.5 Litre Petrol and 2.0 Litre Petrol. However, the Indian version will get a petrol and diesel engine options. Recent MG RX5 spied images suggest that it gets a tall stance with proper boxy-shape. Expect the SUV to be priced from Rs 10 Lakhs to Rs 15 Lakhs (ex-showroom). After the SUV’s launch, MG will add new variants in its Indian lineup every year.
The MG RX5 gets 1.5 Litre and 2.0 Litre petrol engines. The 1.5 Litre produces 166 BHP worth of power and 250 Nm worth of torque. The 2.0 Litre produces 217 BHP worth of power and 350 Nm worth of torque. However, the Indian spec would not get two petrol engines. The 2.0 Litre Multijet Diesel engine will likely replace the 2.0 L petrol engine. The Diesel engine produces 170 Nm worth of power and 250 Nm worth of torque. For transmission, it will get a 6-speed Manual gearbox with an optional 7-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of exterior design, the MG RX5 spied images was heavily camouflaged which can tell us only some elements. The SUV gets projector headlamps in the front with bracket-shaped LED DRLs. It gets a V-shaped front grille which has the ‘MG’ logo. On the rear, there are sleek LED tail lights with a rear wiper and LED stop lamps. Globally, it gets heated Electric ORVMs with turn indicator, front and rear skid plates and 18-inch alloy wheels.
In terms of features, it will flaunt some premium quality, given to the competition it faces. Globally, it gets 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, AWD intelligent four-wheel drive system, Electric Sunroof, Auto-Dimming Interior mirror, Cruise Control and Auto Start-stop button. In terms of safety features, it gets Front Airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Hill Descent Control, Rear Parking Sensors with Camera and ISOFIX child seat mounts. Most of the features are likely to come in the Indian version too.
For the competition, it will go against Hyundai Creta, Toyota Rush, Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Mahindra Scorpio and the upcoming Jeep Renegade and Kia Concept SP. If its expected prices are between Rs 10 Lakhs to Rs 15 Lakhs, it would give tough competition.
