VW Polo is an iconic vehicle in the history of the automobile industry across the globe. But its reign in the Indian market comes to an end.

India’s last VW Polo has finally rolled out of the showroom. This marks the end of the iconic German hatchback after 12 years after it was first launched in our market at the Auto Expo 2010. Polo always attracted ardent driving enthusiasts toward itself and the owners of Polo have been immensely satisfied with the product. However, in the last few years, the cabin was beginning to show its age due to a lack of modern features. But the exterior design remained quite timeless all these years.

India’s Last VW Polo

This short video clip captures the last Polo driving out of the dealership to its new home. The premium hatchback wears a customised Legend badge alongside the Polo nameplate at the rear. This is a silver MPI Comfortline variant with a black roof. At the front, one could witness the familiar sharp headlight cluster with a sleek back grille with a massive VW logo installed on it, there are contours and attractive design elements beneath the bumper, and fog lamps at the edges of the bumper.

The tail section is plain with just the compact taillights on the edges of the tailgate and a black belt at the end of the bootlid. There is also a roof-mounted spoiler with a regular antenna on the roof. The side profile is accentuated by the stylish and elegant alloy wheels. All in all, it reminds us of the timeless design language of the German carmaker. On the inside, the cabin is rich in quality but basic in features. That was the painpoint for a whole bunch of buyers by the end of its lifespan in our market.

Specs

The peppy hatchback came with a 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine that outputs 110 hp and 175 Nm of peak power and torque. There is also a less powerful and more affordable 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine that develops 76 hp and 95 Nm of peak power and torque. There are options of a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. While this version is now discontinued, there are not too many hints from Volkswagen suggesting a new version to replace it. That is because the international market has the Polo that is larger than 4 m in length which will attract higher taxes in our market.
