Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Skoda Kushaq are two mid-size SUVs competing against the segment leaders, Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Recently, a Skoda Kushaq owner bought a Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder without even taking the test drive. Hyryder is developed by Toyota with mild and strong hybrid engine options. On the other hand, the Kushaq comes with turbo petrol engines. It has been a trend among driving enthusiasts to go for VW-Skoda products because of the sheer driving pleasure due to the peppery turbo petrol engines and great handling. On the other end of the spectrum are those people who use cars as just a mode of transport and need high fuel economy and comfortable ride. The hybrid powertrains are geared more towards those people.

The owner shared information on a Team BHP Forum. He bought the top V trim with the strong hybrid. Influenced by the review of the mid-size SUV, he didn’t even bother to take a look at the car in flesh or go for a test drive. He booked the vehicle on Day 1 and saw it only on the day of the delivery. Driving it home, he was impressed by the seamless transition between the petrol engine and the electric motor. However, he felt that the engine fires back when idling with the AC ON.

Moreover, he felt that the power is enough for city and highway rides for him. He also enjoyed the smooth e-CVT automatic transmission and was able to achieve an impressive real-world mileage of 23.7 km/l after driving the SUV for 160-odd km on day 1. The point to note here is the fact that he was not driving consciously to squeeze out the maximum mileage. He was just driving regularly. Therefore, one could achieve around 23 km/l quite effortlessly which is where the high initial price of the strong hybrid is compensated.

Other Feedback

Other things he noticed about the Hyryder are:

  • The HUD (Head-Up Display) provides a lot of information.
  • TPMS shows info in kPa and he has not been able to set it to Psi.
  • The infotainment & touch screen is very smooth & feels modern enough.
  • The car keys are sleek and modern but the lock/unlock sound is quite 2000-ish.
  • AC controls feel nice to touch but the camera quality is average.
  • He misses electric seat adjustments
