Our country often faces challenges that are only dealt with once someone loses their life as seen in this latest case in Bengaluru.
A Mahindra Xylo has drowned in water filled in an underpass in Bengaluru leading to a sad demise of a techie. Indian roads, especially, in crowded metro cities, are often inundated with water in the cases of heavy rainfall for a long duration of time. That is exactly what ended up happening in this case. Due to heavy rainfall and hailstorm in Bengaluru recently, many areas, including residential complexes experienced water accumulation. Roads are the first things that get submerged in water due to poor infrastructure and drainage.

Mahindra Xylo Drowns in Underpass in Bengaluru
This incident has been covered by a lot of local and national media. The 23-year-old Bhanurekha, a techie at Infosys, was travelling with 6 others for a vacation. However, while returning, their vehicle got stuck in an underpass at K.R. Circle in Bengaluru city. The driver kept driving as the warning gate outside the underpass was blown away by the wind earlier. Without realising the depth of the water, the Mahindra Xylo got submerged within minutes. The windows got jammed as the passengers struggled to breathe.

The rescue operation was underway when 6 people were evacuated. Bhanurekha was also pulled out of the water and taken to the hospital nearby. However, she was pronounced dead. It was reported that she had taken a lot of water in, which resulted in her tragic demise. It is high time the authorities and drivers start taking things seriously. The infrastructure has to be improved to deal with such situations more responsibly. Losing young lives due to such a flaw is unacceptable.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased and said, “They had rented a car and were touring the city. Including the driver, there were seven people. There was a barricade to prevent people from entering the underpass. But the barricade had fallen over due to rain. The driver could have avoided the underpass. Yet, he entered it.” Let us hope that we don’t get to hear about such cases in future. Also, make sure to be responsible for your own safety in such conditions.
