Maruti Celerio Features And Specifications

ย  Diesel Petrol
Displacement 793cc 998cc
Power 47 bhp 67 bhp
Torque 125 Nm 90 Nm
Transmission 5-speed manual 5-speed manual/AMT
Mileage 27.62 kpl 23.1 kpl

The major difference between the Maruti Celerio Diesel and Petrol version is in terms of the specifications. While the petrol gets a tried and tested Suzuki K-Series engine, the diesel gets a newly developed 2 cylinder, 793cc motor. Quite obviously, the petrol is the more powerful of the two and better to drive as well. A torque rating of 125Nm means that in city driving conditions the Celerio diesel DDiS 125 does not feel underpowered and performs decently, but put the foot down even a little and the car starts to run out of breath. The petrol, on the other hand, is known for its peppiness. The diesel also sounds a bit gruff and unrefined and misses out on an automatic transmission. The biggest selling point of the Celerio DDiS 125 is the ARAI certified mileage of 27.62 kplย which makes it the most fuel efficient car in India.

Ride and handling review

Celerio’s suspension is of the softer side which is good for a comfortable ride quality yet not too soft to make it feel too shaky at higher speeds. The car has good stability and handles well at high speeds, but it may not be as sharp as its siblings like the Swift. But for most buyers in this segment, high speed cornering and sharp handling are not first priority anyways. Overall, the suspension is nicely tuned for city driving conditions, the steering is light weight and turning radius is tight.ย These are the inputs we got from our friends at Autocar India who were lucky to get a drive of the Celerio.

Maruti Celerio is based on the Suzuki A Wind Concept, some pictures of the A Wind are as below:

Maruti Celerio VS Hyundai i10 VS Maruti Wagon R

Hyundai i10 has been a touch target for Maruti to crack and besides it strong hold on small car segment in India, Maruti has not been able to bring down the popularity and sales number of Hyundai i10 with any of its products. Maruti Celerio is expected to change this situation and also it is expected to dent the sales of its own sibling, the Maruti Wagon R. Lets have a quick look at the comparison a bit more in details.

Maruti Celerio VS Hyundai i10

Maruti Celerio is a great advancement in terms or design when it comes to rivaling the Hyundai i10. The Celerio brings the curvy styling and spacious design which is one of the attractive points of the i10. The Wagon R looks too boxy and A-Star was too small, which is why i10 has been more rivaling the Wagon R so strongly.

Comparing the Maruti Celerio and Hyundai i10, both look very close in terms of dimension, style and visual appeal. In terms of power and performance, the Celerio is very similar in power and performance compared to the Hyundai i10, but the fuel economy of the Celerio at 23.1 KMPL ARAI is better than the irde2 engine of the Hyundai i10 which delivers 19.8 KMPL as per ARAI data.

Comparing the price and after sales service, Celetrio can give tough competition to Hyundai i10 as we know that Maruti has a long history of aggressively pricing their cars and their service reach and prices are already among the lowest in India. In short, Celerio can be a real tough competition to Hyudnai i10.

Maruti Celerio VS Maruti Wagon R

As we have seen with earlier small car launches of small cars from Maruti, there is always some overlap in their pricing with their own cars. The Celerio will overlap the pricing of Wagon R on the lower side and Ritz on the higher side. The sales of Wagon R are expected to be impacted adversely with the launch of Celerio. Besides the Celerio being pricier compared to Wagon R, the inclination of the buyer will go towards the Celerio because of its more attractive body styling and much better looking design. We saw similar kind of drop in the sales of Santro when the i10 was launched.

In terms of engine and transmission, the Celerio is nearly the same as Wagon R with same K10 petrol engine, but the Celerio gets some improvements in engine technology and thus giver better mileage. In terms of design and style, Celerio is more attractive and spacious. In terms of price, Celerio is more loaded and pricier, but for the buyers, who are not on very tight budget, spending some extra money to get Celerio instead of Wagon R won’t be such a big issue.

Our Take On Maruti Celerio

Maruti Celerio is a much welcome addition to Maruti’s small car offerings. There was a lack of affordable small car which looked attractive. The Alto 800 is fine, but in 1 litre segment, Wagon R is not much of a looker, the Sting Ray, however looks better, but is not much of a change from the boxy tall boy design of the Wagon R. Hence we think that it is a good addition to Maruti family, but we will be able to give you our final take after we get a drive of the same.
