MG Motors has now revealed that its first product in India, a compact premium five-seater SUV based on the Baojun 530 is going to be called as the Hector. The name, according to Morris Garages (MG) takes its inspiration from the Trojan warrior Price Hector of Troy and stands for qualities such as strong, bold yet at the same time trustworthy and dependable. In addition to this, the automaker states that this name also pays a homage to the a biplane by the same name which served the Royal Air Force during the 1930s.
MG Motors is going to manufacture this compact premium SUV in India itself at its plant based in Halol, Gujarat. The MG Hector is going to have 75% localization. Based on the automaker’s global platform, the Hector has been thoroughly re-engineered for the Indian market.
MG Hector- Price in India
|Expected Prices||INR 15 lakh – INR 20 lakh|
The Hector is going to compete against the likes of Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass and the Mahindra XUV5OO when it makes its debut in India. Since its fall in the segment of sub-premium compact SUVs, we are expecting the same to adorn a starting price tag of INR 15 lakh with the top-end variant retailing close to INR 20 lakh (ex-showroom). Anything more than this will make it unreasonable and might put a tag of ‘too expensive’ on it.

However, there have been a number of speculations stating that the Hector is going to come with a Fiat sourced 2.0-litre, Multi-Jet unit. This engine is the same unit which currently performs its duty on the Jeep Compass. That said, the same engine will be available in its BS-VI guise in Hector. The power and torque figures of this engine are likely to stand at 170 BHP and 350 Nm respectively. This engine is going to be offered in both manual as well as automatic transmission options.
Details regarding the petrol engine of the MG hector are still a topic of debate. There is a chance that the automaker might use Fiat’s 1.4-litre, Multi-Air unit which currently powers the petrol derivative of the Jeep Compass. In their, this engine is capable of producing 162 BHP along with 250 Nm of peak torque. At the same time, we cannot rule out the possibility of MG using its own 1.5-litre unit which does its duty on the ZS SUV sold in the international markets. Just like the diesel derivative, the petrol engine is also going to offer both manual as well as automatic transmission options.
MG Hector- Mileage

On the other hand, expect a fuel-efficiency figure of around 12-14 km/l from the petrol derivative of this SUV.
