MG HS SUV

MG will bring in the popular HS SUV to India next month, which will go against the Hyundai Tucson and higher variants of Jeep Compass.

For the 2020 Auto Expo, MG Motor India is bringing in many new models. We have a couple of confirmed till now, but now we have another one. MG is going to bring in the popular HS SUV, more premium than the MG Hector.

MG HS SUV measures nearly 4.6 metres long, smaller than the Hector. A new teaser confirms the HS coming to India next month. Even the HS is a C-Segment SUV but is made for the more premium markets around the world. It is actually MG’s flagship model.

In the Indian market, MG could bring in the HS to compete with the likes of SUVs costlier than Hector. So, it will go against Hyundai Tucson, upcoming Skoda Karoq and the range-topping variants of Jeep Compass. It will be a 5-seater SUV as well.

Under the hood, the MG HS SUV gets two engines – a 1.5 Litre turbo-petrol and a 2.0 Litre turbo-petrol engine. The 1.5L engine produces 170 PS and 250 Nm of peak torque. The 2.0L engine produces 231 PS and 370 Nm of peak torque.

Globally, the 1.5L engine gets a 6-speed MT and a 7-speed DCT. The bigger engine gets a 6-speed DCT as standard. Additionally, the bigger engine gets an AWD system, which is likely to come on the India-spec HS as well.

Features onboard could include LED headlamps, LED DRLs, a fully digital instrument console, 10-inch touchscreen infotainment with the i-Smart technology, panoramic sunroof, leather seats, the SuperSport Drive mode, 360-degree camera and a lot more. Globally, it also gets autonomous braking, lane assist, auto-pilot and blind-spot detection.

We can expect MG to place it in the 17-23 Lakhs range, which seems perfect as per its competition. Initially, MG is expected to bring it in through the CKD route and then locally assemble it at its Halol plant. Seeing the success accordingly, the manufacturer will commence its local production.
