MG Windsor EV vs MG Comet EV Specs Prices Features Design Comparison

MG Windsor EV is the latest electric car in India, while the Comet EV is an established compact product

In this post, I am comparing the MG Windsor EV and MG Comet EV in terms of specs, prices, features and design. Both these are electric vehicles from the same Chinese-owned British car marque. The Indian electric automobile market is growing quite rapidly. There are new products arriving frequently. Windsor EV is a prime example of that. In fact, MG is trying to expand its footprint in the country. Including the Windsor EV, there are a total of three electric cars from MG in India. For now, let us compare the latest MG EV with the most affordable EV in the market.

MG Windsor EV vs MG Comet EV – Prices

What could easily confuse a whole bunch of the populace is the pricing strategy of the MG Windsor EV. The vehicle has a price tag of Rs 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom. However, this doesn’t include the battery prices because MG is offering it as BaaS (Battery as a Service). Under this model, the company is charging Rs 3.5 per km as a battery rental. Hence, you will end up paying as per your usage. In fact, during the launch ceremony, MG officials calculated the overall running costs to be around Rs 5 km. Furthermore, for the first year, MG is offering users free public charging under its eHUB department. Also, the company is giving an assured buyback condition with 60% value after 3 years of ownership. Finally, with MG’s e-Shield Package, customers get 3 years of unlimited warranty, 3 years of RSA and 3 years of Labour-free maintenance services. On the other hand, the MG Comet EV ranges from Rs 6.99 lakh to Rs 9.53 lakh, ex-showroom.

MG Windsor EV vs MG Comet EV – Specs

The new MG Windsor EV is available in a single battery version. It carries a 38 kWh LFP battery with a Prismatic cell structure. This battery utilizes an efficient Battery Management System (BMS) to ensure great performance even in extreme temperature conditions. It powers an electric motor mounted on the front axle to give a range of 331 km on a single charge. In real life, this number will vary depending on the driving mannerisms and usage. The maximum power and torque outputs stand at a healthy 136 PS and 200 Nm. The battery takes around 55 minutes to charge from 0 to 80% using a 50 kW DC charger.

On the other hand, the MG Comet EV is designed primarily for city usage. Hence, it gets a 17.3 kWh IP67-rated lithium-ion battery pack which powers the electric motor to generate a decent 41 hp and 110 Nm of peak power and torque. It utilizes MG’s GSEV platform. On a single charge, MG claims a range of handy 230 km. Also worth mentioning is that the Comet has a 4-seat configuration. Using an AC charger, the battery can be juiced up in just 7 hours. To suit the needs of buyers, there are three driving modes to choose from – Eco, Normal and Sports. Therefore, every buyer can find a suitable driving setting.

MG Windsor EV vs MG Comet EV – Features

This is where the two EVs differ significantly. The new Windsor EV comes with tons of modern amenities to grab the attention of buyers. MG has always been a carmaker who values connected car tech and internet features over everything else. While this is true even for the Comet EV, it still lacks a lot of functionalities due to its price range. Still, let us take a look at the details of the MG Windsor EV first:

Design Comparison

Because of the kind of vehicles these two are, there are significant differences between their designs and road presence. On the one hand, we have the MG Windsor EV. It is a crossover electric car. At the front, it has an LED light bar that culminates into LED DRLs on either side. In the lower section of the front fascia, there are headlamps on the extreme edges. Also, the portion under the bumper constitutes of sturdy elements like a prominent skid plate. This area is devoid of any grilles which is a testament to the electric credentials of the EV.

Apart from that, the side section of the Windsor EV is interesting too. There are 18-inch aero alloy wheels which fill up the wheel arches quite nicely. Also, the EV has flush-fitting door handles and black side pillars. In addition, there is a chrome strip which covers the entire body of the car and is seen underneath the window frames. Coming to the rear, one gets greeted by a connected LED strip which joins the taillamps. The bumper section is sporty with a skid plate-like component. All in all, it has to be an EV with quite a unique and distinct road presence.

On the other hand, the MG Comet EV also bears an unorthodox appearance. The overall dimensions of the EV are compact. At the front, it gets an LED light bar which makes up the compact bonnet section. This light bar extends towards the side fenders where it meets up with the ORVMs. In the lower section at the front, the Comet has a headlamp cluster with a tiny grille section. On the sides, the EV gets just two doors with a black roof and a quirky profile. At the rear, it gets a connected LED strip along with two stand-apart taillamps. I also like the vertical reflector light setup. In essence, the MG Comet EV is a tiny 4-seater electric car perfect for urban applications.

Our View

Choosing between these two is quite tricky. There are concrete distinctions between the two. On the one hand, we have the MG Windsor EV. It is a crossover SUV which is much larger and practical than the Comet EV. Also, its attractive price point is another reason why you can opt for it. However, you must make sure to calculate the actual running costs including the battery rental charges. In this way, you can know what the ownership cost will be. On the other hand, you know that the Comet EV is the most affordable electric car in the country. Hence, if you are on a tight budget and want to use the Comet EV as a secondary car mainly for city usage, it makes sense to go for it. In any case, you need to understand the use cases of both these EVs to make the final decision.
