The new Ford Mondeo will be powered by a range of petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid engines but the biggest change keeping in line with the trends, is that it might be a mid-sized crossover.
In an effort to regain a strong foothold in the European market, Ford has been looking at completely restructuring its European line-up. They have already discontinued models like the C-Max/Grand C-Max MPVs and Ka+ hatchback due to poor sales. On the flip side, Ford plans to launch at least three new vehicles for the European market in the next five years. One of them could possibly be the new Ford Mondeo, but this time a little different.
The Ford Mondeo was a very popular sedan but this time, it might be reborn as a mid-sized crossover. The new Mondeo will be based on Ford’s C2 platform which also underpins the new Focus. The C2 platfrom will also be used in other future models from Ford like the next-gen Fiesta and the future seven-seat Edge SUV. The front section will also be used by Ford’s upcoming Transit and Tourneo family.
The new Ford Mondeo may replace the old Mondeo sedan as well as the S-Max and Galaxy models. The new Mondeo will come with petrol and diesel engines along with the option of a 48V mild-hybrid system. The 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine from Ford is likely to be the base engine of the range. The mild-hybrid variant is expected to have a belt-driven electric motor and small battery.

As for the diesel engines, Ford hasn’t announced any details of them yet, but chances are that there could be multiple diesel engine options for the European market. The engines in this new crossover will be Euro-VI compliant and some rumors claim that the diesel engines would be as clean as the petrol ones in terms of emissions. The Mondeo is expected to be a front wheel driven car with possibly an electronic traction control system as a driver aid.

The new Ford Mondeo is expected to make its European debut in 2021. If launched in India, the Ford Mondeo would sit between the EcoSport and the Endeavour in Ford’s India line-up. However, the Mondeo will most likely not come to India as Ford is already developing an all-new SUV for India in that space, which is being jointly developed with Mahindra.
