New Honda City vs VW Virtus - Specs, Price, Features Comparison

The latest sedan to enter the Indian automobile market is the updated Honda City

In this post, we compare the new Honda City with the VW Virtus on the basis of specs, price, features, etc. The Indian automobile market has been dominated by SUVs for a long time now. Still, the likes of the Honda City, VW Virtus, Hyundai Verna and Skoda Slavia have kept this segment alive. The sales have remained strong. This is due to the fact that modern sedan cars come with tons of new-age tech, active and passive safety features, powerful engines and decent ground clearance to deal with our challenging roads. For now, let us compare these two popular products in this space.

New Honda City vs VW Virtus – Specs Comparison

Let us commence this comparison with the new Honda City. Just like the outgoing model, there are no changes to the engine and transmission options. This means that it gets the familiar 1.5-litre i-VTEC naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre strong hybrid petrol engine generating a healthy 121 PS / 145 Nm and 126 PS / 253 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. Performing transmission duties with the former is either a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox, while the strong hybrid avatar uses an e-CVT automatic. The biggest talking point of the latter is the colossal 27.26 km/l mileage, which is ideal for those who travel long distances frequently.

On the other hand, the VW Virtus comes with two turbo-petrol engine options – a 1.0-litre TSI and a more powerful 1.5-litre EVO TSI unit. These engines deliver 115 PS / 178 Nm and 150 PS / 250 Nm, respectively, offering a good balance of performance and drivability. Transmission choices are quite versatile as well. The 1.0-litre engine can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic, while the 1.5-litre motor is exclusively paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Overall, Volkswagen offers enough combinations to suit different driving preferences.

Editor’s Note

Yatharth Chauhan, Managing Editor

Having followed the mid-size sedan segment closely for years, I believe the Honda City and VW Virtus represent two very different approaches to the same category. The City continues to appeal to buyers who prioritise refinement, comfort, reliability and fuel efficiency, especially with the strong hybrid option now becoming increasingly relevant in today’s fuel-cost scenario. On the other hand, the Virtus caters more to enthusiasts who value turbo-petrol performance and solid highway dynamics. In my view, this comparison perfectly reflects how the Indian sedan market has evolved beyond just practicality and now caters to multiple driving preferences and ownership expectations.
