New Hyundai Verna Outsells Honda City, Posts 400% Growth

Hyundai Motor India Limited is on a winning streak in India. The new-gen Hyundai Verna was the big winner in March in terms of sales figures. Once again, the car has topped the mid-size sedan segment in the Indian market. It sold over 4,000 units in April 2023. The Hyundai model left behind popular models like Honda City by a huge margin. The new-gen Hyundai Verna has shown impressive YoY growth of 412 percent. Let’s take a closer look at the New-gen Hyundai Verna success story.

Over 4,000 Units of New Hyundai Verna Sold in April 2023

As per the latest figures, 4,001 units of the new-generation Hyundai Verna were sold in the Indian market in the month of April 2023. Last year, it sold only 781 units during this period. This amounts to a massive YoY sales growth of 412 percent. In comparison, the Honda City sold a total of 1,920 units. The fifth-gen model was placed in the second position. In April 2022, it sold 2,300 units. So, Honda City has shown negative sales growth of 17 percent.

Hyundai Verna is not only eating into the Honda City numbers. Even Skoda Slavia showed a decline of 35 percent in YoY growth. This year it sold only 1,585 units (down from 2,431 units in April 2022) and placed in the third position. The fourth position is held by Volkswagen Virtus with a domestic total of 1,481 units. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz placed at fifth position with sales of 1,017 units in April 2023 (up from 579 units in April 2022). It also showed a YoY growth (76 percent).

Hyundai introduced the all-new Verna in India in March this year. It immediately impressed with the sale of 3,755 units (up from 1,586 units) and a growth of 137 percent in March 2023. The new-gen model came with many updates inside and out. The design elements are borrowed from the global Sonata and Elantra. The new car offers a more spacious cabin. It was launched with a starting price of Rs 10.90 lakh (ex-showroom). The top-end variant comes with a price tag of Rs 17.38 lakh (ex-showroom).

New Verna Specs

The 2023 Hyundai Verna is powered by a 1.5L four-cylinder NA petrol engine that offers 115 PS of maximum power and 144 Nm of peak torque. Instead of a 1.5L diesel engine, the new model comes with an option of a new 1.5L turbo GDI petrol engine. Additional features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an all-digital console, a sunroof, and connected car features. It comes with six airbags as standard. You will also get ADAS-based safety and assistive technologies.
