A new Maruti small car is under development to rival the Renault Kwid. It is likely that this vehicle will launch in India sometime during the year 2019. We tell you all about it.
The Renault Kwid has turned out quite a successful player in the entry-level segment in India. That said, the car is still far from becoming a segment leader which continues to be the Maruti Alto 800. Nevertheless, it has managed to garner a sizable chunk of the Alto’s sales in India. One of the primary reason for this is how the car looks. It boasts of an SUV like stance which we Indians have come to like and rejoice. In addition to this, the Kwid comes with a high fuel efficient engine. With these essentials, the Kwid has left Maruti worried. In order to reclaim its lost ground, Maruti is all set to launch a new small car in India. This car will rival directly with the Renault Kwid and is likely to be based on the Crosshiker concept.
The launch of the upcoming new Maruti small car will take place in mid-2018. The upcoming Maruti car won’t replace the Alto but will be sold alongside. It will target prospective customers of the Kwid by offering a similar SUV-ish design and a high ground clearance. The upcoming small car could borrow design cues from the Suzuki Crosshiker concept shown earlier. Details at this stage are scarce but we expect the car to share its engines with the Alto.

The upcoming Kwid rival from Maruti could be slightly costlier than the Alto. The SUV-like design and a more spacious cabin will justify the higher price tag. Engines and transmissions will come from the Alto twins. This means the new Maruti small car that will rival the Kwid will offer both 800cc and 1000cc engines. The 1000cc motor could even get an AMT to take on the Kwid AMT.
