The hatchback space in our market is quite popular due to compelling products and a value-for-money proposition
In this post, let us take a look at the details of the comparison between the newly launched Tata Tiago and Maruti Swift on the basis of specs, price, features and more. This space is generally occupied by either first-time car buyers or those who are upgrading from entry-level cars. Therefore, people get a balance of new-age tech, features, safety and powertrain options. The Swift has been the most successful vehicle in this space. However, cars like the Tiago have also made an impact. For now, let us check out how these two compare against one another.
New Tata Tiago vs Maruti Swift – Price Comparison
Since India is a price-conscious market, let us start with the costs of each of these products. The new Tata Tiago retails between Rs 4.69 lakh and Rs 7.29 lakh, ex-showroom, in the ICE guise and Rs 5.79 lakh and Rs 7.99 lakh, ex-showroom, for the CNG version. These are pretty attractive prices. On the other hand, the Maruti Swift ranges from Rs 5.79 lakh to Rs 8.80 lakh, ex-showroom for ICE trims and Rs 7.45 lakh to Rs 8.39 lakh, ex-showroom for CNG variants. Hence, the new Tiago has a slight edge in this aspect.
| Price (ex-sh.) | Tata Tiago Petrol | Maruti Swift Petrol | Tiago CNG | Maruti Swift CNG |
| Base Model | Rs 4.69 lakh | Rs 5.79 lakh | Rs 5.79 lakh | Rs 7.45 lakh |

New Tata Tiago vs Maruti Swift – Specs Comparison
Finally, the new Tata Tiago remains unchanged in terms of the powertrain and transmission options on offer. This means that it comes with a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol mill, which generates a decent 86 PS and 113 Nm of peak power and torque in the normal version and 75.5 PS and 96.5 Nm in CNG guise, respectively. The transmission duties are carried out by either a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic gearbox in both versions. Hence, there is an engine-transmission combination for all sorts of needs.
On the other hand, the Maruti Swift carries a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Z12E engine with mild hybrid tech, which produces a decent 82 PS and 112 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. With the petrol engine, the buyers can pick either a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic transmission, while the CNG version is solely on offer with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Therefore, just like the Tiago, there are multiple options to choose from, but the CNG can’t be purchased with the AMT gearbox. Hence, the Tiago has an edge in this regard.
| Specs | Tata Tiago Petrol / CNG | Maruti Swift Petrol / CNG |
| Engine | 1.2L Bi-fuel | 1.2-litre 3-Cyl Z Series |
| Power | 86 PS / 75.5 PS | 82 PS / 69 PS |
| Torque | 113 Nm / 96.5 Nm | 112 Nm / 102 Nm |
| Transmission | 5MT / AMT | 5MT / AMT |

Editor’s Note
Yatharth Chauhan, Managing Editor
Having tracked the Indian hatchback market for over a decade and a half, I can say that this comparison perfectly highlights how buyer priorities are evolving. The Maruti Swift continues to enjoy unmatched brand trust, fuel efficiency and resale value, but the new Tata Tiago is making a strong case with its aggressive pricing, richer feature list and wider powertrain choices, including CNG and EV options. What stands out to me is Tata’s focus on offering more value at the entry level, while Maruti continues to bank on its vast service network and proven ownership experience. For budget-conscious buyers, the Tiago is arguably the more compelling package today, while the Swift remains the safer long-term bet.
