The compact SUV segment is already among the most crowded spaces in India
The next-gen Kia Sonet has been spotted testing in India for the first time ever. Sonet is one of the most feature-laden products in its class. That has been the case with just about every Kia car in India. The Korean auto giant focuses on offering mass premium cars with the latest tech and convenience amenities to pamper the users. That is what has led to the popularity of the Sonet in the first place. Going forward, the new-gen Sonet will take this prowess forward. For now, let us check out what the spy images inform us.
Next-Gen Kia Sonet Spied Testing
The specifics of this case stem from automatta_ on Instagram. The visuals showcase a heavily camouflaged SUV on a public road somewhere in India. At the front, we witness a large horizontal aspect of the grille section, which seems to have neatly merged into the sleek LED lights on either side. The slim LED DRLs are visible through the covering and the bumper bears a rather clean outlook. On the sides, the dual-tone aero alloy wheels seem to have taken inspiration from the more expensive Kias. It is also possible that the new Sonet will get a panoramic sunroof, just like the Syros. Finally, the tail section will contain redesigned elements to set it apart from the current-gen model.
Next-Gen Kia Sonet – Expected Features and Safety
Even though no official announcements have been made yet, we can safely assume that the Korean auto giant will equip the new Sonet with all the latest bells and whistles. In essence, that is the biggest attraction of Kia cars all over the globe. Hence, we can expect things like a large touchscreen infotainment unit, a digital instrument cluster, ventilated seats, powered seats, premium upholstery, a cabin air filter, Level 2 ADAS and much more.
Expected Specs and Price
The new Kia Sonet will be based on the same K1 platform, which underpins the Syros and Hyundai Venue. This means that the rear space will be enhanced in comparison to the existing Sonet based on the K2 platform. In terms of the powertrains and transmissions, there won’t be any changes. It will most likely continue to carry a 1.2-litre NA petrol, a 1.0-litre turbo petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine with manual and automatic transmission options. At present, the prices start at Rs 7.30 lakh and go up to Rs 14 lakh, ex-showroom. However, the new-gen version will bear a slight premium over these.

Having followed the compact SUV segment closely, I can say the Kia Sonet has consistently stood out because of its feature-heavy approach and premium positioning. In todayโs market, buyers are no longer satisfied with just practicality; they expect technology, comfort and a strong visual appeal even in relatively affordable cars. What stands out to me is Kiaโs ability to understand these changing expectations better than most rivals. In my view, the next-generation Sonet will focus heavily on enhancing cabin experience and perceived premiumness, which could further strengthen its position in this fiercely competitive segment.
