Mahindra Thar has arguably been the most popular off-roading SUV in the country for decades now
In a rather hilarious turn of events, a case has emerged where the Odisha Forest Department ended up allegedly purchasing 51 Mahindra Thar SUVs for Rs 12 Crore. Thar is an off-roading monster, which is why it is the go-to choice for a whole bunch of adventure seekers. Over the years, it has remained in huge demand. In fact, currently, we have two iterations of the iconic SUV – a regular 3-door Thar and a more practical 5-door Thar Roxx. In essence, both of these are designed for off-tarmac excursions with a varied degree of practicality.
Odisha Forest Department Buys Mahindra Thar SUVs for Rs 12 Crore
This post stems from Mint on YouTube. The news report mentions that the Odisha Forest Department ended up splurging Rs 7 Crore on 51 Mahindra Thar SUVs and an additional Rs 5 Crore on their modifications. Furthermore, the report also highlights that while each Thar costs around Rs 14-15 lakh, the customization adds another Rs 9-10 lakh. That is why the news has been going viral and the netizens are expressing their shock at this episode.
Firstly, the details pertaining to the official process of acquiring these SUVs are scarce. On top of that, it is unclear what the exact applications of this entire exercise are and what exact customizations have been done on these SUVs. Nevertheless, the taxpayers are concerned about their money being splurged on something so extravagant and potentially futile. The main question is, why would anyone require customising an already capable off-roading machine so extensively? In any case, an audit has been ordered by the authorities to get to the bottom of this.
My View
I must advise our readers to not jump to any conclusions based on this limited information. There are a lot of concealed details in this case. Hence, we must wait for the official investigation before coming to any inference. In any case, this event validates the capabilities of the Mahindra Thar. I shall update this post once more details emerge.
