Suzuki Motorcycle India is aiming to launch an electric scooter in India by the year 2020. The plan overlaps perfectly with Suzuki’s Indian car-making unit Maruti Suzuki launching its first electric car in our country.

Suzuki Motorcycle India, the two-wheeler manufacturing unit of Suzuki Motor Corp, the Japanese auto giant is planning to launch an electric scooter in India by the year 2020. Suzuki’s four-wheeler manufacturing arm in India, Maruti Suzuki has already announced the launch of their first electric car in India by that time. According to a report published in ET Auto, officials at Suzuki Motorcycle India have asked their parent company Suzuki for an electric scooter as well as an electric motorcycle for the Indian market. The report further states that Suzuki has appointed a five-member team for this and has roped in KPMG to come out with a strategy for its electric vehicles in India.

In 2017, a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra and Suzuki chairman Osamu Suzuki led to Suzuki making plans for a sizable investment for the research and development of electric vehicles in India. The Japanese automaker along with Densu and Toshiba are going to invest INR 1,700 for setting up a battery factor in the state of Gujarat. The automaker believes that the two-wheeler segment will offer a better adaptation of electric vehicles than any other. Initially, the automaker plans to launch an electric scooter which will be later followed by the launch of electric motorcycles as well. All that said, this is not the first time Suzuki will introduce an electric two-wheeler. Back in 2011, the two-wheeler manufacturer had launched ‘e-Lets’ an electric scooter. At that time, on a full charge, this electric scooter offered a range of 30 km. This along with high costs was one of the factors that this scooter did not do that well. However, with the improvement in technology, both the costs and the range are set to improve with new models.

We are currently studying as to how can we offer an electric scooter that is accessible and addresses the range issue. We should have an electric scooter for India by 2020,โ€
