Tata Scarlet is a rugged new compact SUV in development, aimed at lifestyle buyers. Expected launch in 2026 with petrol and EV options

Tata Motors is working on a fresh entrant in its SUV line-up, purportedly called the Tata Scarlet – a lifestyle‑oriented compact SUV that’s designed to stand apart from the typical city crossovers. While not much has been confirmed, the sketches, platform hints, and powertrain possibilities already suggest a bold move by Tata to appeal to buyers who want something rugged, stylish, and versatile. In this post, we dig into what we know so far about the Scarlet: design, platform, features, positioning, and expected launch.

What Is the Tata Scarlet?

As per ACI, “Scarlet” is currently the internal codename for Tata’s upcoming compact SUV that will slot below the Sierra in Tata’s portfolio.
Unlike the Nexon, which is aimed at mainstream buyers, the Scarlet is being engineered with a more adventurous, rugged persona in mind – a “mini Sierra,” so to speak. Because it’s still in development, the name “Scarlet” may change before launch.

Design & Styling: Rugged Over Refined

Boxy, slab‑sided profile

The early sketch of Scarlet shows a departure from smooth curves toward a more angular and straight‑edged form. Expect squared wheel arches, upright pillars, and bold cladding to accentuate its tough look.

Bold front fascia

Design cues point to a split headlamp arrangement, flat bonnet, and high-set nose – all contributing to a more aggressive front end.

Practical proportions

The production version is expected to adopt shorter overhangs, a tall glasshouse, and robust wheel arches. Though concept sketches exaggerate wheel size, the real car may settle for 16″ or 17″ alloy wheels.

Platform & Powertrain Options

Flexible architecture

The Scarlet is likely to be built on an evolution of Tata’s ALFA platform (used in Punch and Altroz), which is modular enough to support both conventional internal combustion engines and electric drivetrains.

Petrol, maybe diesel?

A 1.2L turbo‑petrol (already used in Nexon) is the front‑runner for the standard powertrain. There’s also speculation that a larger naturally aspirated petrol, being developed for Sierra, may trickle down. Diesel seems less likely, given stricter emission norms and shrinking interest.

Electric variant possibility

One of the more compelling prospects is an all‑electric version of Scarlet. Tata has already hinted at EV offerings in its future compact SUVs. Some suggest even a dual-motor AWD setup could be possible, though ICE (internal combustion engine) variants are expected to be front‑wheel drive.

Expected Features & Technologies

To stay competitive, Scarlet is expected to come loaded with modern tech and safety. Features likely to be included:

  • Digital cockpit with a large touchscreen
  • Wireless smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay / Android Auto)
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • Possible extras: head-up display, premium sound system, wireless charging
  • Safety: multiple airbags, ESC (electronic stability control), ISOFIX child-seat mounts
  • Advanced driver assistance: adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, emergency braking
  • Utility features: 360° camera, parking sensors front & rear, panoramic sunroof (rumored)

Positioning & Competition

Complement, not cannibalize

Tata’s strategy seems to be offering two sides of the compact SUV coin. Nexon will remain the family‑friendly, mainstream offering, while Scarlet will cater to buyers who want a more rugged, lifestyle-focused machine.

Who are the rivals?

Scarlet will compete with the likes of Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Tata Nexon itself. But its boxy, rugged look may also draw comparison (or aspiration) from more hardcore off‑roaders like the Mahindra Thar or Maruti Jimny. It might also pull buyers from the Bolero / Bolero Neo territory, but with a more modern, tech-rich edge. On the horizon, Mahindra is also reportedly working on a small lifestyle SUV – so Scarlet will face stiff competition even before launch.

Launch Timeline & Pricing

  • Expected launch: 2026 or 2027, after the Sierra makes its entrance.
  • Expected pricing: ₹8 lakh to ₹14 lakh (for combustion variants). EV variants will likely command a premium.
  • Reminder: “Scarlet” is a project name. Final marketing name may differ.

What to Watch For

  • Will Tata go all in on the EV version, or lean more heavily on petrol variants?
  • How closely will Scarlet’s looks echo the rugged aesthetic seen in the concept vs. practical production constraints?
  • Will the final name align with the “lifestyle” brand positioning?
  • What will Tata’s pricing and variant structure look like to balance between mainstream buyers and enthusiasts?

Our Final Thoughts

Tata’s Scarlet is shaping up to be a compelling addition to the compact SUV segment- a vehicle that blends rugged styling, modern tech, and flexible powertrain options. If Tata can strike the right balance in pricing, performance, and positioning, Scarlet could carve out a distinct niche for buyers seeking something bolder than a crossover but more practical than a full-offroader.
