The upcoming flagship SUV from the Indian automobile giant will lock horns with the Mahindra XEV 9e in our market
The soon-to-be-launched Tata Sierra was spotted testing before the launch yet again. I have been reporting spy images of the SUV for a while now. The Indian carmaker has announced that the electric variant will be launched first. Thereafter, the ICE versions (petrol and diesel) will arrive. Hence, the EV will rival the already popular Mahindra XEV 9e in our market. With multiple spy media in recent times, there are a few things that we know the new SUV will come with. Let us discuss these here.
Tata Sierra Spied – Exterior
The test mule that we have seen until now wears camouflage. That is a common practice among carmakers to conceal the styling of any new car. Nevertheless, the silhouette closely resembles the near-production concept demonstrated by Tata Motors earlier this year. In fact, the images are evident on the website as well. Hence, we know that the front fascia will encompass a sleek appearance with an LED light bar stretching from one side to the other and culminating in LED DRLs. The main headlamp cluster will most likely be positioned on the bumpers. To accentuate the rugged traits, a solid skid plate will be present. On the sides, the boxy frame is visible on the concept, as well as spy images. Here, the alloy wheels, sturdy side body claddings, faux roof rails and an upright stance are eminent. Exact design details will only be available at the launch.
Interior and Features
On the inside, I have no reason to believe that Tata Motors won’t equip it with all the latest bells and whistles. After all, it will be the top-of-the-line product. Even in the spy images, we witness a triple-screen layout, something we have already experienced on the Mahindra XEV 9e. This includes a driver’s digital instrument cluster, an infotainment display and a passenger’s display. This will ensure that everyone gets what they want. Apart from that, the flat-bottom steering wheel with illumination and control buttons will also make it to the Sierra. Moreover, the active and safety amenities will continue to attract new buyers, including Level 2 ADAS.
Expected Specs
Tata Motors will use the Gen 2 EV architecture for the Sierra EV, just like on the Harrier EV. It is built on the existing Omega platform. This will allow it to offer 2WD and AWD configurations. The exact details pertaining to the specifications, battery size and range are yet to be announced. On the other hand, the petrol and diesel versions of the Sierra will launch after the EV. They will be on sale with manual and automatic transmissions. All in all, the new flagship SUV will represent the best that Tata has to offer. It remains to be seen whether or not it will pull customers away from the Mahindra XEV 9e.

Having tracked Tata’s product strategy for years, I see the Sierra as more than just another SUV launch. It feels like a proper flagship that clearly blends nostalgia with modernity. While the Gen 2 architecture shows Tata’s growing EV maturity, its tech-laden cabin and dual powertrain strategy could help Sierra become a strong halo product for the brand. The real challenge, though, will be how effectively it can convert the buzz into volumes against Mahindra’s well-prepared XEV 9e.
