The Hyundai i20 is one of the most popular premium hatchbacks in the country and there’s a brand new generation of the i20 just around the corner. Hyundai have announced that they will be launching the third-gen i20 in India on November 5. Pre-launch bookings for the new Hyundai i20 will commence from today, October 28, and can be made either online or at authorized dealerships for a token amount of Rs 21,000.ย Hyundai has also announced that the new i20 will be available in four variants – Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta (O).

The new i20 will be available in 6 colours – Polar White, Typhoon Silver, Titan Grey, Fiery Red, Starry Night, Metallic Copper. Additionally, it will also be offered in two dual tone finishes – Polar White with Black Roof and Fiery Red with Black Roof.

2020 Hyundai i20 Exterior Design

The new Hyundai i20 is certainly more premium and even sportier looking than the outgoing version. Thereโ€™s a complete makeover in terms of design. At the front, it flaunts the large cascading grille in a gloss black finish. The front and rear bumpers have been designed to give a much sharper look. Even the electric ORVMs are so much more sportier. However, while the international-spec model gets full-LED headlamps, the India-spec i20 even in its top-end Asta variant gets projector headlamps with LED DRLs. It still looks pretty neat though.

The India-spec i20 gets 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, smaller than the international-spec 17-inch alloys. At the back, there’s new Z-shaped LED tail lamps with a connecting LED strip and it looks quite upmarket. Also, thereโ€™s a subtle front splitter on the front bumper and a faux-diffuser on the rear bumper. The dual-tone finish of the tail gate and the chrome garnish that runs along the window line are particularly very attractive features.

2020 Hyundai i20 Interior Design

First up, thereโ€™s going to be a new four-spoke steering wheels which is identical to the one on the India-spec Creta SUV. The steering features controls for the audio system, the cruise control and also for a new fully-digital instrument cluster. The 10.25-inch digital instrument console is however different from the Euro-spec model. This is essentially the same unit that comes on the India-spec Hyundai Verna.

Further, the dashboard also gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system which comes connected with the instrument binnacle. Below the infotainment screen, thereโ€™s a panel with horizontal blades running the length of the dashboard and very cleverly also houses the AC vents, much similar to modern day Audis. You also notice similar blades around the door handles and along the door pockets. The layered dashboard then has a stack of buttons below the AC vents for the HVAC system and it also has multiple USB ports and a wireless charging pad located just ahead of the gear lever.ย

Power (expected)84 BHP100 BHP120 BHP
Torque (expected)113 Nm240 Nm172 Nm

With the new i20, Hyundai will be continuing the 1.2 liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine has already been made BS6 complaint in the current-gen i20 and it will go unchanged on the next-gen car. Apart from that, the hatchback gets two completely new engines.

Hyundai will be introducing a new 1.5 liter diesel engine in the i20. The older 1.4 liter diesel mill has already been discontinued and it was not updated to comply with the BS6 norms. This new 1.5L diesel engine is the same engine that also does duty on the Venue, the Verna facelift and even the Creta and Seltos. Hyundai will however be offering this engine in a detuned state, considering that this is only a hatchback. There will also be the new 1.0 liter turbo petrol engine that’s doing duty on most new Hyundai cars, in the same state of tune as the Venue.

The bigger news is that the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine will even be offered with a 7-speed DCT gearbox, and that will be a first in the segment. Competition Check

The Hyundai i20 is one of the original and oldest premium hatchbacks in the country. It was only much later that a lot of newer manufacturers have entered the segment and its quite competitive now. The i20 has always remained a great value for money offering and with this generation update, its even more so. In terms of pricing, the new Hyundai i20 will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, the Volkswagen Polo, the Tata Altroz, Ford Figo and Honda Jazz.
