Finally, the updated Harrier and Safari were put to the test immediately after the launch. They passed with flying colours and became the safest cars in the country by scoring the highest points of any production car. These have 6 airbags, ESC and ISOFIX child seat anchorages as standard. Additionally, the body shell was rated as stable and capable of withstanding further loads. Furthermore, it also comes with ADAS features, a 360-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system and more functions in higher trims.

Then there is the Hyundai Verna. It is a mid-size sedan which recently received a full 5-star safety rating at the Global NCAP testing in its latest avatar. Verna has been in the industry for years now. The vehicle boasts an array of safety features as standard, including six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), rear ISOFIX mounts, and seatbelt reminders. In the safety assessment, it achieved an impressive 28.18 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection, securing a solid 5-star safety rating. Furthermore, it garnered 42 points out of 49 for child occupant protection, again attaining a full 5-star safety rating. As a result of these exceptional safety achievements, Hyundai’s sedan joins the exclusive club of vehicles with a complete 5-star safety rating at the Global NCAP, alongside the VW Virtus and Skoda Slavia. Hyundai has also scheduled the Verna for evaluation at Bharat NCAP.

The Skoda Slavia and VW Virtus also belong to the mid-size sedan category in our market. In fact, they are the direct rivals to the Verna. Volkswagen, a prominent German automaker, consistently adheres to the rigorous safety standards set by Euro NCAP, renowned for their stringent requirements worldwide. The Virtus and Slavia represents the latest generation models in Volkswagen Group’s Indian lineup, reflecting the brand’s commitment to these exacting standards. In the safety evaluation, they achieved a remarkable 29.71 points out of 34 for Adult Occupant Protection and a solid 5-star rating, alongside a noteworthy 42 points out of 49 in the Child Occupant Protection category, also securing a full 5-star rating. It’s worth noting that the VW Virtus underwent testing under the new assessment protocols at the Global NCAP, introduced just last year.

Sharing the same platform as the Slavia and Virtus, the Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun are the mid-size SUVs which have bagged a full 5-star rating at the Global NCAP. The siblings from VW and Skoda feature one of the most popular and expanding categories in the market. They were able to score a decent 29.64 out of a possible 34 points in the adult protection category and 42 out of a possible 49 points in the child occupant protection category. This amounts to a full 5-star rating in both these categories. Since these two are essentially identical in terms of body panels, engines, platforms and transmissions, their score are similar too.

The final product on this list of the top 5 safest cars in India as per NCAP is the Mahindra Scorpio N. It achieved a 5-star rating by scoring 29.25 points out of 34 in adult occupant protection. Notably, it provided good protection for the driver’s and passenger’s head, neck, and knees, with marginal chest protection. The footwell area and bodyshell were stable, capable of withstanding additional loads. In side impact testing, it delivered good protection for the head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. In child occupant protection, the Scorpio N received a 3-star rating, scoring 28.93 points out of 49. It effectively protected 18-month and 3-year-old passengers in rearward-facing seats with i-size anchorages and support legs, preventing head exposure during frontal impacts.
