In a shocking turn of events, the Indian Government might stop the plying of scooters and motorcycles under 150cc. Read ahead to know the reason!

In an attempt to curb the growing vehicle population in India, the government is taking serious steps. Reports suggest that post 2025, there might be no fuel-powered three-wheelers and two-wheelers under 150cc.

This initiative not only helps in controlling the vehicle density but also encourages a faster EV growth in India. Two-wheelers under 150cc might only be available in electric powertrain.

The cutoff date for electric three-wheelers is April 2023, and that for two-wheelers is April 2025. The dates are set keeping in mind that already automotive brands are investing for BS-6 engines. This period gives them much time to ready themselves.

With this, the subsidy for electric three-wheelers will also be reduced, to encourage its demand. It might be set to Rs 20,000 per kilo watt hour, making it much more affordable.

The government is also planning for even more stringent norms for petrol and diesel powered vehicles, while working towards the financial ease of buying an electric vehicle.

Currently, the infrastructure for electric two-wheelers is also under process. Brands like Hero, Ather, Avon Motors are setting up their public charging stations. But for big cities, a couple of charging stations would not be the done deal.

As far as the four wheeler EV scenario goes, manufacturers like Hyundai, Maruti and Tata will soon be launching their fully electric cars as well as hybrid cars in India in the next 2-3 years.

Under 150cc segment, includes 100, 110 and 125cc commuter motorcycles. This segment makes India the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world. So, an alternative solution to this will also be planned by the automative brands.
