Crossovers and SUVs are very much trending in the Indian markets. If you see, sub-compact SUVs and compact SUVs are much in demand right now. Afte the first hatchback came, people started buying it because they were lower priced and easy to drive. SUVs back at that time were still considered as a means of transporting goods or people. However, with time, people saw SUVs to be as comfortable as sedans. Moreover, it could fit more than 4-5 people, which was an instant catch. Over the time, after their first car as a hatchback, a lot of people switch to compact SUVs. Now, the latest news suggests that many automobile brands have accepted the concept of Micro SUVs. They will sit below sub-compact SUVs like Ecosport and Brezza. Moreover, these SUVs will be mostly priced under the budget of Rs 6 Lakhs.
Brands like Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, Tata, and Datsun have started their work on the idea. Currently, the only ones in this segment include KUV 100 and Ignis. These cars offer a tall-boy stance, SUV type feeling, and great riding quality. These Micro SUVs will mostly be powered by the same engines found in their hatchback counterparts. So, the engine will be small like a 1.0 Litre or a 1.2 Litre petrol unit. Also, these micro SUVs would get AMT variants too.
“People who have been purchasing hatchbacks for years will be looking for an upgrade. India sells over one million hatchbacks every year. Almost 58% of the owners replace their car every six years (and for them) the micro or small SUV becomes a good alternative,” Mayank Pareek, president of the passenger vehicle division at Tata Motors said to ET Auto.
