Volkswagen is one of the best automobile giants out there and always design cars keeping in mind the future requirements. Innovating new things is another characteristic of the brand as it always steps forward for projects meant for future cities.
Volkswagen Up, a small concept car showcased back in 2007, is one of the company’s projects that has been much in anticipation for its production model. At that moment, Walter de Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen group, said
“The up! is not a car whose form will become obsolete within a very brief period of time. It shines in its cleverness and yet is made with loving care. And so the up! is a clear and strong statement for future Volkswagen design.”
Finally the company has declared the official launch venue and month for the car. The UP small car production model will be unveiled at the Paris Grand Palais on the Champs-Elysees in France in the month of August 2011. The car replaces the Volkswagen Lupo which was a success in the South-American market.
As of now nothing is clear about the company’s plans of bringing the car to India but when launched, the car will race against some of the outstanding models like Maruti Wagon-R, Hyundai i10 , Ford Figo, Chevrolet Beat and the rest in the hatchback segment. For long there have been statements of a smaller car for India smaller than Volkswagen Polo, as there is a large market in India for small cars like Maruti Alto, Hyundai i10 etc..
Coming to the pricing of the car, it is expected to be priced very aggressively between Rs.3 to Rs.5 Lakh. The heart of the car will be derived from its sibling Volkswagen Polo. The platform on which the car is built has also been shared by Skoda and Seat.
Our verdict says the car might be competitively priced but it does not looks cheap at all. In fact we believe the engineering to be good enough. Let us hope the car to come to the Indian market soon.
