Volkswagen and Skoda will use the same 1.0 Litre three-cylinder turbo petrol in their upcoming cars. Seven cars will share the engine.

Volkswagen made some major changes in its lineup to make its cars BS6 compliant. Between Vento and Polo, three engines have been discontinued. Its partner Skoda is also going to make major changes related to the engines of its cars.

However, since both of them have come together now, they will use the same engine for a lot of cars. The new 1.0 Litre turbo-petrol TSI engine has replaced all the engines. It first came on the BS6 Polo and BS6 Vento. Now, it will also come on Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Vision and sub-compact SUVs from both the brands.

As for the Polo and Vento, both loose their 1.2 Litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine. Additionally, Vento also loses its 1.6 Litre MPI naturally aspirated petrol motor. The new engine comes as standard on all variants with a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed AT. Even the DSG gearbox has been removed.

The new 1.0 Litre engine produces 108 BHP and 175 Nm of peak torque. Vento and Rapid might not be the most powerful in their class with this engine, but Polo remains to be. Skoda Rapid will loose the same 1.6 Litre MPI and 1.5 Litre TDI diesel engine.

Upcoming cars from Volkswagen include Taigun and a sub-compact SUV. Both of them will also get the same engine and transmission options. Taigun is a compact SUV which will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Nissan Kicks. As of now, there are no details about the sub-4-metre SUV.

In the case of Skoda, it will also be launching the Vision SUV and a subcompact SUV. Skoda Vision was showcased just a day before the Auto Expo 2020 as a concept. We will see it in a production-ready form by the first few months of 2021.

Manufacturers are developing small capacity turbo petrol engines because they are cheaper to upgrade to BS6 norms. Catering to the Indian buyers’ need, these engines will be more fuel-efficient as well. Lastly, over a couple of years, the demand for fun-to-drive cars has increased.
