Fine on Washing Cars with Hoses in Delhi

In a desperate measure to curtail water wastage, the Delhi government has announced a fine of Rs 2,000 if anyone is caught washing cars with drinking water. Severe heat waves and shortage of water have created immense issues in Delhi and its surrounding areas. The temperatures are caressing the 50-degree-Celsius mark and there seems no respite from the extreme heat in the coming days. Hence, drinking water is scarce and the authorities are taking extreme temporary measures to ensure that people don’t waste it.

Washing Cars with Pipes Will Attract Fine

The official reports from the Delhi Government mention that a Rs 2,000 fine will be imposed on those who are caught washing cars with hoses, using domestic water for commercial purposes and overflowing water tanks in Delhi. Atishi, Delhi Minister from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced these new regulars via X. The Government has also issued directions to crack down on the wastage of water and illegal water connections for which 200 teams of Delhi Jal Board have been deployed. Some other news reports also mention that this rule has been levied in Gurugram as well.

We know that Delhi sources a huge part of its water supply from Haryana. However, Atishi claims that the Haryana Government did not release the promised share of water supply to Delhi this month. That is what led to this crisis in several areas in the national capital. In order to tackle the situation, the authorities have to ration the water supply within Delhi more strategically. This will include reducing water supply in some areas to ensure that other areas get some water. Atishi urged the locals to support them in these tough times by not wasting water at all.

Our View

The heat wave has been quite extreme in many parts of North India this time around. The acute water supply shortage will exacerbate the situation further. I feel if things continue in this fashion, the situation could turn ugly and fatal in no time. Hence, I hope that the locals will cooperate and stand together in these challenging times. That is the only way to get through this crisis. Apart from that, any possibility of rain will be a boon for the affected areas at this point in time.
