The new ZF 8-speed Automatic Transmission features a new electric drive for hybrid vehicles. This order also marks the brand’s second largest single order in its history.
ZF, a global automobile component and technology supplier, has announced today that Fiat-Chrysler Automotive (FCA) has chosen ZF to be FCA’s global transmission supplier for their rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles with front-longitudinal drive configuration. ZF will be supplying a new 8-speed automatic transmission to FCA. This is also the company’s second largest single order in its history.
ZF says that this latest version of the 8-speed transmission has been much improved from before and even incorporates an electric drive for hybrid vehicles. This new transmission which is now in its fourth generation will be series produced at ZF’s plant in Saarbruecken from the year 2022. ZF also plans for the production of this transmission in other countries which includes USA and China as well.
Wolf-Henning Scheider, CEO, ZF said that,”We are pleased to be nominated as the global transmission supplier by FCA. This is our second major order for the new 8HP and it confirms our strategy to focus on plug-in hybrids as an everyday solution and to develop attractive products in these areas.”
This new 8-speed automatic transmission is compatible with almost every segment of vehicle as long as it has a front-longitudinal drive configuration. A new innovation with this 8-speed automatic transmission is the incorporation of an electric drive. This also supports automobile manufacturer’s efforts in striving towards reducing CO2 emissions. The modular transmission concept gives automobile manufacturers a lot of flexibility and the chance to switch from one transmission variant to another.
ZF says that they have been nominated by the FCA to supply transmissions really highlights the importance of their global production network. Just three months ago, ZF also signed a deal with BMW to be supplying them with their latest generation 8-speed automatic gearbox as well. That, in fact, was the largest single order that the company has ever received in its history.
