About 1 Lakh Maruti A-Star Cars manufactured by Maruti Suzuki before Aug 22, 2009 have a peculiar problem with the fuel pump gasket and o-ring which prevent fuel leakage. This problem comes when the fuel is filled full to the brim in the fuel tank, it creates chances of fuel leakage that can be a safety hazard.
The recall is being conducted proactively by Maruti Suzuki and they are contacting all the customers with potentially problematic cars and replacing the gaskets and o-rings as preventive measure. Most of the customers have not faced this problem as yet as only a few cases have been reported starting November 2009. This problem had been reveled during a quality inspection by Maruti.
This step to recall the cars and replace the parts before it becomes a large problem is a very essential step for reputed brands like Maruti to save its goodwill and trust which people have towards this brand. Maruti is calling its customers and repairing the problem. The cost of the repair is being borne partly by Maruti and Partly by the fuel pump supplier.

Saturday evening on 27th Nov 2010 , when my wife was returning home from office in her car Maruti A-Star VXI ( Regn No. DL9CL 4858) at about 6:20pm , on the traffic signal at Govindpuri, New Delhi while she was waiting for green signal, there was a loud sound from under the bonnet of the car and smoke started coming out. Suddenly there were flames coming from under the bonnet of the car and she quickly escaped from the car. The flames started small and grew and enveloped the car in a deadly inferno. Police and passerby’s stopped & tried to get the fire under control but that could not happen. Finally fire brigade people reached on the spot & controlled the fire. The car was completely burnt & Finally taken to Police Station at Okhla Industrial Area , New Delhi.
The car was recently given to Apra Auto (I) Pvt Ltd, Okhla Phase-I, New Delhi ( Maruti Authorised service Dealer), on 21.11.2010 for regular servicing & received back on 24.11.2010 at about 7:00 pm.
