Mercedes Benz‘s biggest SUV on sale, the GL-Class, underwent a makeover for 2016ย with minor interior and exterior updates, as well as a new name. The plus-szieย SUV has beenย rebadged and the facelifted version will be known as the Mercedes Benz GLS Class as part of the new nomenclature adopted by the company, which also saw the ML-Class being rebranded as the GLE and the GLK being rebranded the GLC.ย The car made its international debut last year and MBIL has announced that they the GLS India Launch will take place on May 18. Mercedes-Benz India has announced that the GLS will be launched on May 18. The launch of the GLS will be followed by that of the GLC SUV, which could turn out to be a very important product for the manufacturer in India. Currently, GLS’ predecessor, the GL is priced at INR 77.50 lacs for the GL 350 CDI and INR 1.75 Cr for the GL63 AMG. We expect the GLS to be priced in the INR 80-90 lacs region for the GLS 350d. The AMG’d version of the GLS will come to India at a later stage with a sub- 2 Crore price-tag.
What’s New?
Theย updates to the exterior of the Mercedes Benz GLS areย minor. The SUV gets a new set of headlamps, a more upright twin slat front grille, a new bonnet and a redesigned front bumper. The side of the car sees no changes while at the back, much like the front, will get an updated bumper and tail lamps. Changes made to the interiors of the Mercedes Benz GLS, like the exteriors, aren’t very significant. A refreshed cabin is nowย accompanied by an 8 inch floating touchscreen for the COMAND infotainment system and a three spoke steering wheel.

Specifications
The currentย GL’s diesel motor has beenย carried over to the 2016 Mercedes Benz GLS- a 3.0 litre V6 producing 255 bhp. Transmission duties will now be handled by a new 9-speed automatic transmission, replacing the 7-speed automatic, and permanent 4 wheel drive. The AMG version gets a 5.5 litre twin turbo V8 which puts out 557 bhp! An ultra luxurious version under the Mercedes-Maybach moniker is also on the cards for the GLS.
The updated GLS will face stiff competition from the newย Audi Q7ย and the Volvo XC90. Much like the Audi Q7, the upcoming GLS will not be available for registration in New Delhi and the NCR as it will be powered by a diesel engine that is more than 2000 cc in capacity.
