2017 Volkswagen Tiguan – All You Need to Know!

Popular German premium car manufacturer, Volkswagen, had announced two new models for India. First of these two Volkswagen cars in India is the Tiguan SUV. The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan India launch took place on May 24 this year and production of this upcoming SUV is underway at VW’s production facility in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Prices start at Rs 27.98 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The 2017 Tiguan SUV becomes the second SUV model, after the now defunct Touareg, to come from Volkswagen India. The new 2017 VW Tiguan SUV made its India debut at the 2016 Auto Expo. It comes to us in a 5-seater format.

Underpinning the 2017 Volkswagen SUV is the MQB (Modular Transverse Matric) platform. The modern platform has also been used to underpin the latest iterations of the Skoda Octavia and the VW Golf. The new Tiguan, when compared to its predecessor, is as much as 50 KGs and offers a more spacious interior. Internationally, the Tiguan is on sale in two variants – Front Wheel Drive (FWD) and All Wheel Drive (AWD). Also, the Tiguan SUV is on sale in 5-door and 7-door body variants. India gets the 5-door version. The only engine on offer is the 2.0-litre TDI turbo Diesel motor that offers a max. power of 143 PS and a peak torque of 340 Nm. It comes with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.

The 2017 Tiguan has become the flagship model from VW India. The new SUV is priced in the range of Rs 28 lakh to Rs 31 lakh. In India, the new VW SUV will face competition from Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Jeep Compass. Following the launch of the new SUV, Volkswagen India will bring the new Passat to our shores.

2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Price in India

The new 2017 Tiguan SUV comes to us via CKD-route. Hence, it is slightly pricey. Anyway, VW India isn’t really known to price its cars ultra competitively. Tiguan comes with a starting price of Rs 27.98 lakh for the base model of the new SUV. The top model costs Rs 31.38 lakh. At this price point, the 2017 Tiguan will rival everything from a Hyundai Santa Fe and a Toyota Fortuner to the Ford Endeavour.

The Tiguan in India is available with just one engine – a 2.0 L Turbo Diesel with 143 PS-340 Nm on the tap. It gets a 7-speed DSG Automatic transmission. This is the same engine that also powers the Skoda Octavia. Both variants of the Tiguan get the 4Motion AWD (All Wheel Drive).

Underpinning the new 2017 VW Tiguan SUV is the manufacturer’s MQB platform. This platform leads to a lot of weight savings and also a spacious interior. The upcoming SUV enjoys a wheelbase of 2677 mm, which is 60 mm longer than earlier generation. The car is also 30 mm wider than before. It has a ground clearance of just 149 mm according to specifications issued by VW. The new VW SUV is 4,486 mm long, 1,839 mm wide and 1,672 mm tall. It has a boot space of 615-litres. It can be further maximized to 1,655-litres by folding down the rear seats.

2017 Volkswagen Tiguan India Review – Exterior

The new 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan looks bold, upmarket and has that distinct Teutonic touch to its design. The Tiguan has a n aggressive stance that should look sufficiently daunting on the road. The new VW SUV gets a typical VW face with chrome-plated grille and sleek headlamps. The headlights are in turn flanked by LED DRLs. The SUV gets a sporty front bymper and a sculpted hood.

The side profile is characterized by bold wheel arches, stylish 20-inch alloys and roof rails. Even the rear profile looks considerably bold and muscular. Enhancing the style quotient of the Tiguan are bits like a sunroof, roof spoiler, and a chunky rear bumper. Overall, the styling isn’t very eye catching, but it works well and ensures the Tiguan is a smart looking SUV.
