Tata has announced that the seven-seater version of the Harrier will be called the Gravitas and that it will be launched in February 2020, perhaps at the 2020 Auto Expo.

Tata Motors first showcased the seven-seater version of the Harrier at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show where they called it the ‘Buzzard’. Tata Motors have now officially announced the market name for its Harrier-based seven-seater SUV โ€“ the Tata Gravitas.ย Tata Motors have also confirmed that the India launch of this SUV will take place in February, next year, perhaps at the 2020 Auto Expo.

If you have seen pictures of the Buzzard earlier, you would recall that the face of this seven-seater SUV looks largely similar to the Harrier. However, it does get some styling differentiation. It gets roof rails which make it look taller, and also gets running boards and bigger alloy wheels with different wheel designs than the Harrier.

However, it is the rear quarter glass area from where its evident that this is the seven-seater Harrier. The rear portion of the Gravitas is in fact quite boxy and upright as compared to the Harrier. It has been so designed to allow for more headroom for third-row passengers. The rear spoiler is more prominent, while the boot lid is new, with a larger windshield and mildly revised styling for the tail-lights.

Just like the Harrier, the Buzzard will also sit on the same Land Rover D8-derived Omega platform. In terms of dimensions, the Gravitas measures 4,661mm in length, 1,894mm in width and 1,786mm in height. That means the Gravitas is 63mm longer and 80mm taller than the Harrier. However, with a third row of seats and a larger quarter glass for that, the Gravitas loses on the pinched window line that was a distinctive styling element of the Harrier. At 2,741mm wheelbase is identical to that of the Harrier.

The interiors of the Gravitas will however remain identical to that Harrier. It will of-course have a third row of seats though. In addition, Tata could also offer the Gravitas with a panoramic sunroof. Also, while the show car at the Geneva Motor Show had 19-inch wheels, the model spied testing in India ran o 18-inch wheels borrowed from the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The latter are the ones we expect to see on the Gravitas.

Under the hood, the seven-seater version of the Harrier or the Gravitas will be powered by a more powerful, BS6-compliant version of the Harrierโ€™s 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine, producing around 170hp and 350Nm of torque. Transmission options for the Gravitas will include a 6-speed manual and a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed torque-convertor automatic gearbox. With the five-seat Harrier priced between Rs 13-16.86 lakh (ex-showroom), one can expect the Tata Gravitas’ price to be around Rs 1 lakh more than the Harrier’s when it launches in February 2020.
