Tata Sumo

Here’s an imaginative rendering of the Tata Sumo, which was recently discontinued in India due to the safety regulations and upcoming BS6 norms.

Tata Sumo was discontinued last year after completing 25 years in India. It has maintained its title of one of the most dependable workhorses that we ever had. In rural areas and tourist spots, you can still spot a Sumo ferrying the passengers.

Tata has no plans of launching the Sumo again but we still cannot rule out a possibility. Right now, it does not have any contender for the 10-15 Lakhs segment, leaving a gap between Nexon and Harrier. Even Safari has also been discontinued.

Here’s a rendering of the Tata Sumo that has been imagined with the brand’s new design language. You have the same boxy silhouette but with refreshed design lines. Sumo was a tall-boy boxy SUV and this rendering more-or-less maintains that.

This Sumo has been equipped with Harrier’s 2.0 Litre diesel engine. As said earlier, there are no reports of the name making a comeback in India, anytime soon. Launched back in 1994, Sumo was one of the earliest Tata cars to make it to production.

It came with two engine options, including a 3.0 Litre diesel and a 2.2 Litre Dicor diesel. The bigger unit produced 85 BHP and 250 Nm of peak torque. The Sumo Grande, which was launched in 2008, came with the other engine, that produced 120 BHP and 250 Nm. Both the engines came mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Meanwhile, at the Auto Expo 2020, Tata unveiled the Sierra concept. It was showcased as an electric vehicle concept, inspired by the design of the loved three-door SUV. Sierra was launched in India ahead of its time and was shortly discontinued due to poor sales.

We all know Tata has launched some cars that were well ahead of its time. There’s the Sierra, Safari Petrol, the Mercedes-copy Tata Estate and the Indigo XL. All these cars are long lost in India and might never make a comeback in India.
