South African Expert Compares 3-door and 5-door Suzuki Jimny

The Made-in-India Suzuki Jimny 5-door has been launched in the South African market recently. The Jimny is a famous off-road SUV with a history spanning over 50 years, known for its lightweight and 3-door design. It’s loved worldwide and is a top pick for many buyers seeking an affordable off-roading SUV. However, in India, we get the 5-door model instead. This decision is straightforward: Indian customers prioritize practicality. That’s why Maruti Suzuki introduced the 5-door version for the first time with the Jimny. Now, this Jimny is being exported from India to South Africa too.

South African Expert Compares 3-door and 5-door Suzuki Jimny

This post stems from FE BUILDS on YouTube. The host has a detailed walkaround tour of the exterior and interior of the Suzuki Jimny in 3-door and 5-door guise. This provides viewers with an excellent chance to see the differences in real-world situations. The vlogger parks the SUVs side by side, clearly demonstrating the variation in length at the back. Everything remains unchanged up to the B pillars, but the area behind them is new. The wheelbase is now longer to create more room for passengers in the back. By pushing the rear axle further back, they’ve stopped the wheel arches from taking up space inside. Additionally, the longer wheelbase has freed up more boot space. All other features remain unchanged.

Specs

The standard Maruti Jimny comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated K15B petrol engine, delivering a respectable power of 103 hp and torque of 134 Nm. This engine can pair with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission, powering all four wheels through Suzukiโ€™s distinctive ALLGRIP PRO 4ร—4 drivetrain. This drivetrain includes a low-range transfer case and a locking differential. The SUV boasts an impressive ground clearance of 210 mm and has approach, break-over, and departure angles of 36ยฐ, 24ยฐ, and 50ยฐ, respectively. In terms of pricing, it falls within a competitive range, starting from R429,900 to R479,900.

Author’s Note

This video does a great job of showcasing what the exact differences between the two Jimny models are. For those who value practicality and space inside the cabin and would want to go on long trips with family, opting for the 5-door Jimny is prudent. In fact, despite its length, it doesn’t compromise on its off-roading prowess. That is the best part about the Jimny 5-door. It still remains one of the best off-roading SUVs at this price point. In India, it is selling in decent numbers. It is almost imminent that the South African customers will like it too.
