Mahindra Inglo Sub-Compact SUVs

Mahindra is launching a slew of new-age electric SUVs based on the born-electric INGLO platform

In this post, I am discussing whether or not we will see a sub-4m born electric SUV from Mahindra in the coming months. We know that Mahindra developed a scalable and modular bespoke EV platform called INGLO. In fact, it has already launched two new EVs which are underpinned by it – XEV 9e and BE 6e. Going forward, there are plans to introduce at least 4 more EVs on this architecture. However, it is intriguing to see if either of these will be a sub-4m SUV.

Will There Be A Sub-4m Born Electric SUV From Mahindra?

Now we got the opportunity to experience the details of the new architecture from Mahindra during our official visit to the R&D centre. The official Mahindra sources told us that the platform is designed to accommodate large batteries to power bigger SUVs. Also, if the dimensions of the SUV are too small, the chassis won’t be able to support it fully. Also, a major reason for the existence of the sub-4m category is because the taxes on cars which are longer than 4m are higher. However, that is valid only for ICE cars and not EVs.

Therefore, there is little incentive for carmakers to launch sub-4m EVs. Hence, I don’t believe we will see a compact electric SUV from Mahindra. That can also be confirmed by the fact that the Mahindra XUV400 has been specifically stretched to over 4 m to increase its boot space even though it is based on the erstwhile XUV300 which measures less than 4m in length. When Mahindra didn’t make an EV in this space when it had the option, there is almost no chance for it to do it with the new architecture which is inherently designed for large SUVs.

My View

It is fascinating to see how the strategies of the carmakers change between ICE and electric cars. This is smart since the companies create their products based on the government policies at play. In addition, they also come up with new vehicles depending on the demand and preferences of the customers. Hence, it is not a matter of what they want to launch but a combination of multiple factors.
