How Tyre Repair Kit Works – A Step-wise Guise

Even though this is something that people didn’t really need to learn up until a few years ago as they would let a mechanic do it, it is, sort of, become important in today’s age. The reason is that many new cars come with tyre puncture repair kits instead of a spare tyre. Also, almost all modern cars use tubeless tyres. Hence, the repair process is relatively simpler. For now, let us delve into the details of this process.

How Tyre Repair Kit Works

In this video, the host showcases multiple types of repair kits. However, the plug strip technique is by far the most common. Also, understanding the procedure is crucial since the basic principle remains almost similar. Hence, let us delve into the step-wise explanation of the process.

1. You will generally find the plug strip in either orange or black colour.
2. It mostly uses rubber cement or glue to help seal the repair.
3. The strip is inserted into the puncture site using an insertion tool.
4. You would mostly use a single strip from the packet for a normal puncture.
5. In this video, the host showcases a puncture caused by a nail which is a perfect representation of most scenarios.
6. You need to insert the strip into the eye of the insertion tool.
7. It is a straightforward step and you need to put the strip into the eye until the halfway mark.
8. Once the nail is removed from the tyre, the reamer tool must be pushed into the hole to prevent excess leakage.
9. It also serves the purpose of cleaning and enlarging the hole to allow a proper fitting of the strip.
10. Then you can apply rubber cement on the strip if the setup comes with it.
11. You must then pull out the reamer and insert the plug strip into the hole.
12. Remember to push the strip in the hole until about 3/4 of an inch remains outside the tyre.
13. Since the tip of this insertion tool is open, the strip will not be pulled out when you pull out this tool from the hole.
14. You must rotate the tool 180 degrees before pulling it out.
15. Getting a visual from inside the tyre, we are able to see how the strip plugs the hole from the inside.
16. Finally, you can cut the excess strip flush with the tyre using a regular cutter.
17. In this manner, the repair is complete.

Now, while there are some other methods shown in this video, it must be understood that the overall aim is the same – to plug the hole from the inside. Some of the other techniques are Mushroom Plug Repair, Sticky String Repair Kit, Tyre Repair Gun and Tyre Screw Repair Kit.
