The Vietnamese auto giant has finally opened its first facility outside Vietnam
VinFast has finally inaugurated its electric vehicle assembly plant at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. In the last few months, it has been announcing key developments about its operations here. This includes things like showrooms, assembly plant, service networks, establishing supply chains, customer care, etc. Clearly, the auto giant aims to make India a huge base for its operations. For now, let us take a look at the details of this latest instance.
VinFast Inaugurates Electric Vehicle Assembly Plant in India
VinFast has opened its first manufacturing plant outside Vietnam, in Tamil Nadu, India. This new facility is the company’s third operational plant and part of its global expansion. Spread across 400 acres, the plant includes several production units like Body Shop, Paint Shop, Assembly Shop, and a Quality Control Centre. It also features a logistics hub and space for local contractors, which may grow in the future. The plant will focus on assembling two electric SUV models, VF 6 and VF 7. It starts with a production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year, which can later increase to 150,000 units. VinFast aims to meet growing demand while supporting India’s push for clean mobility.
At full scale, the plant is expected to create up to 3,500 direct jobs and many more indirect ones in the supply chain. This supports Tamil Nadu’s goal of becoming a leading EV manufacturing hub in South Asia. VinFast plans to work with local suppliers, helping with technology sharing and workforce development. The company also has partnerships to strengthen after-sales support and digital services. Collaborations include dealer groups in major cities and service providers like RoadGrid, myTVS, and Global Assure. In addition, VinFast has teamed up with BatX Energies to recover and reuse EV batteries. This fits into their broader plan to create a circular and sustainable EV ecosystem in India.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, stated: “The VinFast Tamil Nadu plant marks a strategic milestone in our long-term commitment to the Indian market. It establishes a strong foundation for sustainable growth and positions us to offer high-quality, competitively priced electric vehicles to Indian consumers. Looking ahead, the facility will expand its production capacity to meet rising demand. We aim to develop it into VinFast’s largest export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. In fact, we’ve already secured initial orders from several countries across these regions. In close collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government, VinFast is working to transform the area into the ‘EV capital of South Asia’—supporting both the dynamic domestic market and our broader regional ambitions.”
