Sunroofs are supposed to be much stronger than the regular windows of any vehicle
In a rather shocking turn of events, an electric SUV owner claims that the sunroof of his car was broken while driving on a highway. Admittedly, that is quite serious and concerning and definitely something we don’t experience all that often. The trend of sunroofs in India has gone through the roof. To cater to the demands of consumers, carmakers have been equipping their models with sunroofs even in relatively affordable cars. This obsession of Indians with sunroofs is quite well known. For now, let us take a look at the details of this case here.
Sunroof of a New Electric SUV Breaks
This post stems from justtoodesi on Instagram. The man in the video claims that he is the owner of the electric SUV. He is evidently frustrated with his 2-month-old SUV after he claims that the sunroof ended up bursting suddenly while he was driving on the highway. He was on his way from Gurugram to Uttarakhand. The man alleges that the sunroof broke on its own and he had to install a cardboard from a roadside shop to complete the journey. I must admit I have never reported something like this in my 5-year-old career.
Now, while we don’t know about the details of what led to this, generally, such an event could happen due to a manufacturing defect, glass impurity, sudden temperature changes, structural stress, etc. Obviously, if aftermarket accessories are involved, the quality could have been compromised. As a result, we shouldn’t jump to any conclusions before knowing the full details. What is quite heartening to know is that the carmaker has come out with a statement that it will launch an investigation to get to the root cause of this mishap. We can only hope that the correct information comes out soon.
My View
I must advise our readers to never jump to conclusions based on videos on social media. Sure, they could be accurate. Still, it makes sense for official investigations to get over so that all the facts come to light. Only thereafter should we make up our minds about the entire episode. I shall keep an eye out for more updates on this case.

Having tracked countless quality-related cases over the years, I can say that sunroof failures, while rare, demand immediate and transparent investigation, especially in a Rs 30-lakh EV where expectations are understandably high. With India’s growing obsession for panoramic roofs, manufacturers must ensure their glass quality and structural tolerances are robust enough for our harsh climates and road conditions. Until the facts are officially established, it’s crucial we avoid speculation, but this incident should serve as a wake-up call for carmakers to tighten QC as feature-loaded SUVs flood the market.
