The mid-size SUV space is among the most crowded and competitive in the Indian market
The new VW Taigun has officially been teased ahead of the premier on April 9. Taigun has been a pretty successful product for the German carmaker. Based on the heavily localized MQB A0 IN platform, products like the Taigun and Virtus really made the German auto giant expand its market share in India. In fact, together with the likes of the Skoda Kushaq, Slavia and Kylaq, the VW Group has achieved new heights in our market. Now, the Taigun mid-size SUV is getting a makeover to stay in competition with its rivals.
New VW Taigun Teased
The official teaser of the new VW Taigun showcases the trademark German design language with sharp creases and understated body panels. In fact, we witness sleek LED DRLs at the front, sporty alloy wheels, familiar body panels and functional roof rails on the sides and a roof-mounted spoiler and LED taillamps at the rear. Since it will be a facelift, we don’t expect drastic enhancements to the design, cabin or powertrains. Nevertheless, it will boast a fresh exterior, some added in-cabin tech amenities and a similar set of powertrain and transmission options. This will include a 1.0-litre turbo petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol mill with manual and automatic gearbox alternatives.

From what we’ve seen so far, Volkswagen is clearly playing it safe with the Taigun facelift, focusing on incremental updates rather than a radical overhaul. In a segment dominated by feature-loaded rivals, I believe VW will need to go beyond cosmetic tweaks and significantly enhance in-cabin tech to stay truly competitive. That said, the brand’s core strengths, solid build quality and engaging turbo-petrol engines, continue to give the Taigun a distinct edge among driving enthusiasts.
