The market for vehicles with alternative fuel is gaining momentum in the midst of the new government policies to push flex-fuel cars

In this post, we take a look at the details of the new Maruti Wagon R Bioflex and the Tata Tiago iCNG to conclude which one makes more sense. Note that in order to reduce crude oil imports and dependence on other nations, the government of India has been pushing for flex-fuel cars with ethanol blending. While the E20 (20% ethanol in petrol) is already a norm, the government is planning to go beyond. In fact, it wants to plan for vehicles to be E100 compatible. That is exactly what the Maruti Wagon R Bioflex can achieve. However, to curb running costs, CNG has remained a popular choice for a whole bunch of people, especially in big cities and among commercial fleet operators. For now, let us compare these two here.

In a price-sensitive market like India, it is understood that the initial cost of a vehicle plays a crucial role in deciding which car to buy. The new Wagon R Bioflex is available for Rs 7.24 lakh, ex-showroom. Remember, it is based on the ZXi+ trim of the regular car. On the other hand, the Tata Tiago iCNG ranges between Rs 5.80 lakh and Rs 8.55 lakh, ex-showroom. Hence, the prices are somewhat comparable, although there are more options with the Tiago iCNG in terms of variants.

Next up, let us delve into the specifics of what powers these two automobiles. The new Maruti Wagon R flex-fuel draws power from the same 1.2-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated K12N mill which also powers the petrol model. It is good for 91 hp and 114 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively, and can be paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. What makes it different from the regular engine is the updated fuel injectors, fuel pumps, fuel lines, a recalibrated ECU and an ethanol sensor to ensure that it runs smoothly on ethanol blends ranging from 20% to 100%. That is its main attraction, making it future-proof.

On the other hand, the Tata Tiago iCNG comes with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated 3-cylinder engine, which generates a considerably lower 75.5 PS and 96.5 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively, in the CNG guise. However, what is quite impressive and convenient for the buyers is the fact that it is available with a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic gearbox. Hence, buyers get to pick the one version which makes the most sense for their requirements. We know that with CNG engines, the boot space and performance have to be sacrificed.

Both these vehicles are meant for budget buyers. Nevertheless, there are still all the modern-day amenities inside the cabin that one would want. For instance, the new Wagon R Bioflex has things like a SmartPlay infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Steering-mounted controls, Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Rear parking sensors, Electronic stability features, etc. Similarly, even the Tata Tiago iCNG offers a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment display, blind view monitor, 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, electrically adjustable ORVMs, 4-speaker music system, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, etc. Hence, the Tiago iCNG has a slight advantage in this regard since its cabin is more well-appointed.

Which One To Buy?

The main question remains: which car should you buy? Now, these two vehicles are clearly for those who want to have low running costs. Since the price of higher ethanol blended petrol is around Rs 20 cheaper than regular petrol, one would think that the running costs will also be lower. However, the lower petrol content in the fuel could also mean slightly lower mileage. Therefore, the actual savings might be less. On the other hand, CNG is a much cheaper option in comparison to petrol. However, one has to make a compromise with the performance. In conclusion, there are compromises to be made with both these products. Having said that, one should opt for that car, which resonates with their individual needs the best.

As someone who closely follows the Indian automotive industry, I find this comparison particularly interesting because it highlights two very different approaches to reducing running costs. On one hand, Maruti’s Wagon R Bioflex represents the government’s long-term vision for flex-fuel mobility and reduced crude oil dependence. On the other hand, the Tata Tiago iCNG offers a proven, readily available solution with an established refuelling network and predictable ownership costs. While the Bioflex certainly appears future-ready, the Tiago iCNG currently makes a stronger case for most private buyers due to its richer feature list, broader variant range and practical real-world economics. Ultimately, the success of flex-fuel vehicles will depend on fuel availability, pricing and how quickly the supporting ecosystem develops across the country.
