The two Toyota off-roading models go up against each other in this detailed comparison post

The new Toyota Hilux has been launched in India and I am comparing the top model of the Hilux with the similarly priced version of the existing Toyota Fortuner. Note that I am considering the variants which have an on-road price of around Rs 40 lakh in both cases. The Japanese car marque is known for creating extremely rugged vehicles. These are particularly well suited for hardcore off-tarmac excursions. In fact, the Hilux is a world-famous moniker in this space and the Fortuner is the more practical SUV iteration of the Hilux. For now, let us delve into the details of this exciting comparison.

New Toyota Hilux vs Fortuner – Price Comparison

Even though we are comparing the models which have an on-road price of around Rs 40 lakh, it makes sense to know the pricing of the entire range of these two models. The new Hilux ranges between Rs 31.99 lakh and Rs 36.69 lakh, ex-showroom. On the other hand, the Fortuner starts at Rs 34.76 lakh and goes up to Rs 50.46 lakh, ex-showroom.

New Toyota Hilux vs Fortuner – Specs Comparison

This is an interesting aspect since the diesel avatars of both these products share the specifications. However, the Fortuner is also available in a manual version, along with a petrol engine. In any case, the vehicles use the tried and tested 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine, which generates a healthy 204 PS and 500 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. In the case of the Hilux, there is a sole automatic transmission option, while the Fortuner can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. Note that with the manual gearbox, the Fortuner generates the same power but a lower 420 Nm of torque. Remember that the automatic version will cost significantly more than Rs 40 lakh. Also, if one opts for the higher versions, the 4×4 configuration will be available. Therefore, at the Rs 40-lakh-mark with the Fortuner, one needs to shell out for 4×4.

My View

Now, this is a crucial aspect while deciding which product to choose. I believe there are distinct use cases for both of these Toyota cars. The new Hilux is for those who want an outright adventure companion. It comes with hardcore and rugged elements, is fully capable of traversing across treacherous terrains, has a cabin and features list which are built to last a lifetime and the cargo compartment is large enough to carry all sorts of luggage. On the other hand, the Toyota Fortuner makes more sense for those who love off-roading but with family. Also, the SUV offers more comfort and practicality. However, to get an automatic transmission and 4×4 configuration, one needs to shell out more. In any case, personal usage is the primary factor to decide which one makes more sense.

Editor’s Note

Yatharth Chauhan, Managing Editor

The Toyota Hilux and Fortuner may share the same DNA, but they cater to two very different types of buyers. If your priority is uncompromised off-road capability, durability and carrying adventure gear, the Hilux is difficult to ignore, especially at this price point. The Fortuner, meanwhile, remains the more versatile family SUV with superior comfort and everyday practicality, although matching the Hilux’s automatic 4×4 setup requires spending considerably more. Ultimately, the choice boils down to whether you want a purpose-built lifestyle pickup or a premium SUV that can comfortably balance city duties with weekend adventures.
