Hyundai may launch an entry-level variant for Santro to compete with the popular Maruti Alto.

Hyundai clearly wants the Santro to be a popular hatchback in terms of design, features and value for money. The latter, however, is taken into consideration and now reports suggest that Hyundai might re-evaluate to manufacture a low-cost variant of Santro.

It is because the Santro starts at a price tag of Rs 3.9 lakh (ex-showroom) and the company feels that it is nowhere close to its competition Maruti Alto. Since the EON will be discontinued soon, hence, there will be no direct competition to the car from Hyundai.

The new variant will sit below the D-lite model and will be the entry-level variant for Hyundai. The car will surely be cutting out on most features to bring the manufacturing cost down and so it will be easy on consumers pocket.

It’s not officially confirmed but the dual tone beige & black interiors might be ditched for an all-black theme, champagne gold interior colour garnish could also be removed.

Gear shift indicator might see a miss and so dual trip meter followed by average speed, service reminder and average speed and tachometer. Hyundai Santro D-lite variant already misses out on AC so Hyundai might pull out power steering option too for the new variant.

Currently, Santro is available in 2 engine options, Petrol and CNG. The 1.1L, 4-cylinder petrol motor churns out 68 bhp with a peak torque of 99Nm. The car is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed AMT.

The CNG variant holds up with the same 1.1L, 4-cylinder petrol engine. However, power figures are reduced to 59bhp with 84Nm of torque. The CNG variant is available only with a manual transmission.
