Hyundai Kona EV which offers 452 km of driving range will be sold via 15 select specialised dealerships all over India

Hyundai recently launched the Kona all-electric SUV in India on the 9th of July and it is the very first all-electric SUV in the country and will be made available at select dealerships only. However, the electric vehicle chapter in India might just change with the new Hyundai Kona. The eSUV is priced at a premium of Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and Hyundai plans to sell 500 units annually.

Hyundai has announced at the press event that they would be selling the Kona only in 11 select cities through specialized dealerships. Hyundai will be the first manufacturer to debut an all-electric SUV in the country, ahead of MG, who also has the eZS electric SUV slated for launch later this year.

Hyundai will have select dealerships in the metro cities with the necessary infrastructure needed for EVs. These dealerships will have fast charging facilities which can be used to charge the Kona’s battery upto 80% in under an hour.

Hyundai Kona will be provided by two chargers – a portable charger and an AC wall box charger. The portable unit can be plugged into any normal 3-pin 15 AMP socket and can charge up to 50 km in 3 hours.

Hyundai Kona EV gets a 39.2 kWh advanced lithium-ion polymer battery which produces 136 bhp with 394 Nm of peak torque. The car takes about 9.7 seconds to go from 0-100 km/h. The battery gets a liquid cooling technology. The claimed range for the Hyundai Kona stands at 452 km by ARAI on a single charge. However, the real-time driving range could come down to 380-400 kms easily, which is also great.

The Kona is quite a handsome looking SUV. It looks pretty much similar to the regular Kona except for some revisions to the grille which now sports an unique pattern and the bumpers too have been slightly redesigned. The driving range of the Kona is pretty good considering the other electric cars we have in India like the e-Verito has a driving range of only 140 km.

Like all Hyundai’s, the Kona will be very well loaded with all necessary equipment. It will feature an 8-inch touchscreen display with live services, real-time traffic updates, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker KRELL premium audio with a subwoofer, heated and ventilated seats and more. It might also get the BlueLink connectivity system that debuted with the Venue. On the safety front, it will have six airbags, ABS, blind spot detection, hill-start assist and a reverse camera.

The Kona will be priced around Rs. 25 lakhs when its launched. Hyundai Kona is priced fairly at Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Being the only all-electric SUV in the country, it will enjoy no competition for some time but with the MG eZS coming soon, the holiday period wouldn’t be too long. Also, it would be interesting to see electric cars compete in the Indian market for the first time.
