In what has already been an exciting beginning to the year for BMW with a slew of products lined up for launch, it has started with the launch of 220i M Sport in India. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will be available from today onwards with diesel as well as petrol powertrains. This launch will come equipped with an M Sport package to include some sporty elements to the regular 2 Series Gran Coupe. To keep the costs in check, the 2 Series is assembled in India itself. Let us take a look at what this new model brings.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe M Sport – Exterior
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is actually based on the 1 Series hatchback and it is an extension of the 2-Series lineup which also includes a Coupe, Convertible and Active Tourer body styles in the international market. Built on a front-wheel-drive platform, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a styling that’s typically new-age BMW with a large kidney grille and aggressive LED headlamps. This four-door sedan has a low-slung look with a good balance of aggressive contours and clean lines, and you get a very attractive looking car.
The front and rear bumpers on the car are also very aggressively styled. The dual-tone alloy wheels and dual exhausts further add to the sporty quotient. The side profile is also characterized by a beautifully sloping roofline that ends in a fastback-like rear section. The pillar-less doors look extremely attractive, and it must be mentioned that no other car at this price point has this feature. The well-sculped boot lied with slim LED tail lamps round off the look at the rear.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe M Sport – Interior
On the inside, the dashboard layout is pretty familiar with most modern BMWs and in fact, most of it has been carried over from the 3-series sedan. The ergonomics are spot on and BMW’s i-drive system controlled by a swivel wheel on the center console remains one of the best in the business. The center console also gets the typical BMW gear lever but other elements inside the cabin are quite familiar. This might be an entry-level BMW but the quality of materials and fit and finish are still very high.
The feature-list includes 12.3-inch Digital Touchscreen Infotainment System with Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch Digital Instrument Cluster, 3D Navigation, Ambient Lighting, Head-Up Display, Powered Front Seats, Panoramic Sunroof, Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control, Six Airbags, Parking Assistant and Rear View Camera. It has all the features that one might expect from a BMW.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe M Sport – Engine and Transmission
It is this segment that has changed a bit from the regular 2-series Gran Coupe. While the earlier there was only a 2.0-litre diesel engine available which produces 190hp and 400Nm, now it also comes with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol which makes 190hp and 280Nm. BMW claims that the petrol engine carries out 0-100 kmph in just 7.1 seconds. The diesel does the same job in 7.5 seconds. Both these engines are coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 220i M Sport costs Rs 40.90 lakh, ex-showroom.
