Datsun, the low cost brand of Nissan will be resurrected on theย 15th of Julyย and India will be one of the first markets to see and hear about the brand’s future plans. A low cost hatchback, which will be based on the Micra will be showcased and it will be priced between Rs.3-4 lakh. It will be followed by the launch of another hatchback which will be positioned in the Rs. 2-3 lakh bracket. Now news is coming in that Datsun will launch a low-cost MPV in the B-segment MPV category and will go head-to-head with the likes of the Chevrolet Enjoy and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
Datsun wants to take things slow and initially it plans on putting just 18,000 units of the MPV on roads a year. The company wants to see how it performs in the Indian market. The MPV will be the first Datsun branded car in the country to come with both ย petrol and diesel motors, the two hatchbacks will be motored by a petrol engine only.
The diesel engine to be used on the MPV will most probably be the 1.5 litre K9K motor that powers the Micra and Sunny for Nissan in India. The petrol unit will be a 3-cylinder, 1.2 litre motor which will be used in the entry level variant. Datsun cars will be sold through Nissan showrooms only and there will be a different part of every dealership that will be dedicated to Datsun cars. The same dealerships will be responsible for ย after sales services.
Datsun cars will be built at Oragadam facility of Nissan. The cars will come with a pretty heavy level of localisation, leading to a lower price tag and cheaper maintenance. The low cost cars will be exported from India to Russia, Indonesia and South Africa as well. All Datsun cars will be positioned below the Nissan counterparts and will be aimed squarely at bringing in volumes for the company. All will be known once the company announces its plan of action on the 15th of July.
